Gert-Uwe Mende (born October 15, 1962 in Bonn ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was elected Lord Mayor of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden on June 16, 2019 .

Life

Mende was born in Bonn in 1962 . His family moved to the north Hessian town of Bebra in 1966 , where his father August-Wilhelm was full-time mayor for two decades. From 1981 to 1987 Mende studied middle and modern history, political science and economics in Göttingen . The following year he did his community service at the student union in Göttingen. From 1989 to 1990 he completed an editorial traineeship at the Hessische / Niedersächsische Allgemeine in Kassel . Then he was editor at HNA in the news / politics department until 1991 .

From 1991 to 1997 Mende was press spokesman for the then Hessian Interior Minister Herbert Günther and his successor Gerhard Bökel . From 1997 to 1999 he was head of the ministerial office in the Hessian Ministry of the Interior and for Agriculture, Forests and Nature Conservation . From 1999 to 2006 he was press spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament . From 2006 to 2019 Mende was managing director of the SPD parliamentary group.

Mende is married and has two children.

Political career

Mende joined the SPD in 1979. From 2017 to 2019 he was deputy chairman of the SPD sub-district Wiesbaden. From 2016 to the end of June 2019 he was a member of the local advisory board for the Wiesbaden district of Dotzheim and in 2018/2019 the local mayor of Dotzheim.

In March 2019, Mende was elected as a candidate for the Wiesbaden SPD for the upcoming mayor election after the incumbent Sven Gerich announced that he no longer wanted to run. Mende won the first round of the OB election on May 26th with 27.1% of the vote. In the runoff election on June 16, he was able to prevail against Eberhard Seidensticker ( CDU ) with 61.8% .
