Sylke von Gaza (born July 1, 1966 in Hamburg as Sylke von Gazen called Gaza) is a German artist . In addition to her main abstract painting, she is involved in numerous projects with the effect of painting in architectural space and the process of painting with the inclusion of the environment. Von Gaza lives and works in Munich , Venice and Zurich .

Professional background

At the age of three, Sylke von Gaza was taken by her great-grandmother on long trips to Italy , especially Venice and Emilia-Romagna. She experienced architecture and painting for the first time during visits to the numerous churches, for example in Ravenna , Assisi and Venice . That left lasting impressions and is still the inspiration for her work today.

With her undergraduate degree, von Gaza graduated as an engineer . During her studies of free painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 2002 to 2007 with the Irish painter Sean Scully , von Gaza dealt intensively with the painting of old masters and Abstract Expressionism . In 2007 von Gaza completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with the distinction of master class student .

Artistic creation and work

The Dutch and Italian Renaissance painting is a central element in Sylke von Gaza's work as a source of inspiration. With her mostly large-format, abstract oil paintings , she places herself in the tradition of the old masters without referring to it in her formal language. Venice offers the artist an ideal creative space in the field of tension between the past and the present. In her work, von Gaza poses the question of tradition and identity in painting and, through this position, provokes the discussion about the value of art and society.

Her previous work can be divided into different creative strands. Her main painterly work consists of early works , individual works, thematic work groups, site-specific works and the Veil Paintings series, the best known of which are the Gray Veil Paintings and Red Veil Paintings .

The veil ( Veil ) as an abstract metaphor for transcendence and permeability plays a central role in Gaza's work. Showing by covering up and making visible by covering up as the core gesture of painting are characteristic of the artist's work.

Since 2012 the artist has been painting in the sacred space , especially in projects in the churches of Venice . Since 2013 von Gaza has been painting in various Venetian churches in collaboration with the Curia Patriarchale di Venezia: Chiesa San Fantin (2014), Chiesa San Lio (2015), Cappella Santissima Trinità (2016).

During the 2015 Art Biennale , the Venetian Curia of Gaza commissioned a work grant for the Gussoni Renaissance Chapel of the Church of San Lio. As part of the Beyond the Veil project , the Gussoni Red Veil Paintings Triptych was created on site in this chapel, which is intended to remain permanently in the Renaissance chapel designed by Tullio and Pietro Lombardo around 1479 . The Gussoni Chapel also houses the burial place of the Venetian vedute painter Canaletto .

At the invitation of the Venice Patriarchal Seminary, Gaza presented its Il Nido project . A Pilgrimage towards Equilibrium as part of the Padiglioni Paralleli for the 57th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia 2017 in the building complex of the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute . In spring 2019, the installation Il Nido traveled on to the Memorial Church in Berlin .
