Wissembourg synagogue

The synagogue of Wissembourg , a French city in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , was built in 1960. The synagogue is located on Place des Carmes / Rue des Charpentiers.

history

The Jewish community in Wissembourg has built three synagogues one after the other since the 19th century. The first was built in 1805 and the rapid increase in the number of parishioners soon made it too small. A larger synagogue was built from 1869 to 1872. This was destroyed during the Second World War and a new synagogue was built on the same site in 1960.

As the few Jewish residents of Wissembourg could no longer receive the synagogue, the city of Wissembourg offered the building for sale. The City Council of Wissembourg decided to buy it at its meeting on July 3, 2009.
