Synagogue (Wingersheim)
The synagogue in Wingersheim , a French parish in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , is a former place of worship that was built in 1875. The secular synagogue is at number 10, rue de la Victoire.
history
A first synagogue was built in Wingersheim in 1775. In 1875 it was replaced by the building that still exists today. During the Nazi era , during the German occupation of France in World War II , the building was misused and served as a milk collection point . After 1945 the synagogue was restored.
architecture
On the eaves-side street front, the synagogue has five arched windows which are closed with white lead glazing and connected with a profiled band. On the western side of the gable is the arched portal and above it a round window ( oculus ). The bid boards were placed above the gable of the entrance portal . The pedestal on which they stood can still be seen on the top of the gable. To the west and south is the gallery , which is supported by cast iron columns. There is also an oculus above the Torah shrine on the east wall.
