Synagogue (Brumath)
The Brumath Synagogue is a place of worship in the French commune of Brumath in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region . It was built in 1844/45. The synagogue , which is included in the “Inventaire général du patrimoine culturel”, is located at 28 rue du Général Rampont.
history
Brumath, which has had a Jewish community since the 17th century , became the seat of the rabbinate in the 19th century . The first synagogue from 1801 was replaced by today's synagogue in 1845. The synagogue was damaged and profaned during the German occupation . In the post-war years it was initially used as a food depot, but has been used again as a synagogue since the renovation in 1957.
architecture
The synagogue, 22 meters long and 18.80 meters wide, is a simple one-nave hall structure that is covered with a gable roof. On the east side, two arcade windows open to the sides of the round window that emphasizes the central axis. A column-supported portico is presented to the western front , in which two smaller round arched portals and the main portal, which is marked by an aedicula , open. Like the few dividing elements on the sides of the synagogue and the frames of the windows, the Doric columns of the portico are made of reddish sandstone. The three-sided women's gallery is reached by a staircase in the western vestibule.
The simple interior is brightly plastered. Next to the arched niche with the Torah shrine is a wooden pulpit with a sound cover halfway up .
