from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue in Benfeld , a French commune in the Bas-Rhin department of the historic Alsace region , was built in 1846. The synagogue at 7a rue de la Dîme was added to the list of architectural monuments in France in 1984 as Monument historique .

In 1876 the synagogue was enlarged according to plans by the architect Raphaël Kahn by adding side wings. In 1922, the Benfeld painter Achilles Metzger painted the synagogue based on the example of the synagogue in Florence .

The following inscription is placed above the portal: “Here is nothing but God's house and here is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:17). The organ , which was installed by Charles Wetzel in 1895, stands on a gallery .

In January 1945 the building was damaged by shell fire. The synagogue has been renovated repeatedly and is in good structural condition.
