Synagogue in Dettwiller

The synagogue in Dettwiller , a French community in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , is a synagogue that is no longer used for church services today. It is located on the corner of Rue de l'école and Rue du Général Leclerc.

history

The Jewish community of Dettwiller already owned a synagogue in the 18th century, which had become dilapidated . The newly built synagogue on the same property was inaugurated in 1851 and was built with financial support from the political community. The plans were drawn up by the municipal builder Maestlé from Saverne .

The 13 by 9 meter building has a ritual bath ( mikveh ) in the basement . The women's gallery was destroyed during the Second World War and the building was badly devastated.

The arched windows , the oculus and the twin window on the gable are characteristic of the taste of the time . The synagogue has not been used for church services since 1960 .
