Synagogue (Reichshoffen)
The synagogue in Reichshoffen , a French town in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , is a former church that is no longer used for worship . The synagogue is located on Rue de la Synagogue.
history
The Jewish community in Reichshoffen has been documented since the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War . In Reichshoffen there was already an older synagogue on Rue des Juifs ( Judengasse ), which was destroyed by fire in 1862. A new synagogue had already been built in 1851/52, as the Jewish community had reached its maximum number of over 200 members in the middle of the 19th century and the old synagogue had therefore become too small.
The new synagogue was built by the architect Albert Haas in a neo-Moorish style. The synagogue was looted during the German occupation in World War II . Church services were celebrated until the 1960s. In 1967 the synagogue was closed. Today it is privately owned.
