history

In 1826 the Jewish community of Saverne bought a piece of land and built a synagogue on it in 1835. The building, which was destroyed after a fire in 1850, was immediately rebuilt.

The new synagogue was built from 1898 to 1900 according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Hannig from Saverne. The inauguration took place on March 9, 1900.

During the Second World War , the synagogue was profaned and used as a meeting room and workshop for the Nazi Fliegerkorps . From 1950, services could be held in the synagogue again .

Above the portal is the following inscription in Hebrew : Thus saith the Eternal: Heaven is my throne and the earth the footstool of my feet ( Isaiah 66: 1).
