PSA-TU engine
The PSA -TU engines are a series of small four-cylinder in - line engines that are used in various Peugeot and Citroën cars. The engine was introduced in 1986 with the introduction of the Citroën AX , it replaced the X series, although it shares many components with its predecessor. The TU is available either as a petrol or diesel version, which is called TUD to distinguish it. The output of the TU engines ranges from 29 to 92 kW (40 to 125 PS). The petrol versions have displacements of 954, 1124, 1294, 1360 or 1587 cm³, the diesel 1360 or 1527 cm³.
The TU engine is or was used in the following vehicles:
- Peugeot : 106 , 205 , 206 , 207 , 309 , 306 , 307 , 405 , Bipper , Partner and Hoggar .
- Citroën : AX , Saxo , C2 , C3 , C4 , BX , ZX , Xsara , C15 , Nemo and Berlingo .
- Fiat : Fiorino .
- Proton : tiara .
The TUD engine was only used in eleven models, seven of which were not from the PSA group:
- Peugeot : 106 .
- Citroën : AX and Saxo .
- Nissan : Micra .
- Maruti Suzuki : Zen D and Esteem D.
- IKCO : Samand .
- Proton : tiara .
- Rover : 114D and Mini Metro 100.
- Lada : Samara .
Name, code
Each TU engine is marked with a version code, for example TU3MC (KDX), which is stamped on a riveted aluminum plate.
The badge contains the following information:
- The fuel used, which is indicated by the first two or three letters: TU (petrol) or TUD (diesel).
- The first number indicates the hundredth place of the displacement: TU3 thus stands for petrol engine 1 3 60 cm³.
The remaining letters or numbers in the sequence provide additional information:
- M indicates that the fuel of an electronic Monopoint - manifold injection is injected (single-injector).
- C shows an electronic ignition without a distributor . ("Dormant" ignition system)
- F indicates that the engine block is made of cast iron.
- A a change (A for "improved") from an earlier version.
- S is a sporty variant with a higher output than the basic engine.
- J means that the fuel is delivered via a multi-port electronic fuel injection system with four injectors (one per cylinder). J immediately followed by a 2 (“J2”) indicates two valves per cylinder (eight in total); if followed by a 4 ( “D4” or “JP4” ), this indicates the presence of 16 valves (four per cylinder).
- P stands for a controlled carburetor .
- 2 or 0.2 shows a carburetor with two throttle valves .
- 4 or 0.4 shows a double carburetor .
- TR shows a version with a reduced compression ratio .
- K means "without a catalyst ".
- Z means "with a catalyst".
TU9
The TU 954 cm³ was the engine with the smallest displacement. Its bore is 70 mm with a stroke of 62 mm. There are five versions. Its output is 29 kW (40 PS), 33 kW (45 PS) or, since the introduction of electronic fuel injection with catalytic converter in 1992, 37 kW (50 PS). He equipped the entry-level versions of the Citroën AX, the Peugeot 205, the Peugeot 106 and the Citroën Saxo. The normal compression ratio was 9.4. Production at Citroën Saxo and Peugeot 106 has been discontinued since the European emission standard Euro III came into force on January 1, 2001.

TU1
The TU1 has a displacement of 1124 cm³ with a bore of 72 mm and a stroke of 69 mm. The output was initially 40.5 kW (55 hp), but with the introduction of electronic injection and the catalytic converter in 1992, it was increased to 44 kW (60 hp). The introduction of multi-point injection led to compliance with the Euro 3 standard while maintaining the same output, there was only a small increase in torque. This engine has been the entry-level model for the Citroën C2 and C3 as well as the Peugeot 206 since 2009.

TU24
The TU24 has a displacement of 1294 cm³ with a bore of 75 mm and a stroke of 73.2 mm. The output was 70 kW (95 PS) for the Citroën AX Sport, as well as for the Peugeot 205 Rallye in a somewhat more powerful version 76 kW (103 PS) with a shorter intake pipe for a more direct air intake. A new version with electronic Magneti-Marelli injection and a catalytic converter with 74 kW (100 hp) was developed for the Peugeot 106 Rallye in 1992.

TU3
The TU3 has a displacement of 1360 cm³ with a bore of 75 mm and a stroke of 77 mm. At the beginning there were also versions with a single or double carburetor . The electronic fuel injection was introduced in 1990 for the Citroen AX GTI and Peugeot 106 XSI, this made for an increase to 73.5 kW (100 hp) at 6600 min -1 . Versions with a carburetor gave way to the versions with electronic fuel injection in 1992, while the sport versions were adopted in 1996.

TUD
The TUD was the diesel variant. Peugeot initially used the TU3 cylinder housing with 1360 cm³ (bore 75 mm, stroke 77 mm) and therefore called it TUD3, but in 1994 the displacement was increased to 1527 cm³ with a bore of 77 mm and a stroke of 82 mm and the engine in Renamed TUD5. It was available with a Bosch or Lucas injection pump. It was installed in some small car models from the PSA group (AX, Saxo, 106) and was also sold to other automobile manufacturers that did not have small diesel engines. For example, it was used in the Rover Metro from 1993 until production ended in 1998. The diesel versions of the second generation of the Nissan Micra and Lada Samara in Europe also had this engine.
