Days that stay is a German feature film from 2011 that was directed by Pia Strietmann .

action

The Dewenters live in the Westphalian city of Münster in the deepest west of Germany. On the outside they are a completely normal family, but behind the neat facade it is seething. Father Christian wants to please everyone, but does everything wrong and has had a lover for a long time. Son Lars hates his father. He blames him for the poverty of his family and fled the provinces to Berlin immediately after graduating from high school. Daughter Elaine already understands a lot more than anyone else thinks, but is not heard. Together with her best friend Merle, she's doing a cool snot squad. It was always mother Andrea who kept this bond of different characters together - until she suddenly and unexpectedly died in a car accident.

Her death brings the bereaved back together. Decisions have to be made, relationships questioned and ties broken. The three family members go on their very own delimitation trip, on which they sound out what actually still holds the family together.

background

The film was shot in 2010 in Münster and the surrounding area in North Rhine-Westphalia . Toccata Film produced, the co-producers were WDR ( Westdeutscher Rundfunk ) and BR ( Bayerischer Rundfunk ) as well as Esperanto Entertainment. Funding was provided by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern , the Hessische Filmförderung and the German Filmförderfonds .

Münster was chosen as the location because the author and director Pia Strietmann was born there and wanted to make the film in her home country.

Barbara Salesch has special appearances in her own show and Manu Delago as a musician.

Reviews

“In her drama about a family trying to come to terms with the death of its mother, Strietmann uses the grotesque and the humorous. With a lot of tenderness and knowledge of human nature, the director stages the rapprochement of the broken family ... "( Süddeutsche Zeitung )

“The strength of days that remain lies in the sensitive and realistic development of a network of relationships that changes decisively through small experiences. The film impresses with its precise observation of interactions and contradictions. Pia Strietmann sends her characters on a demarcation trip and thus explores what still holds the family together. "(Kino-zeit.de)

"The way Bundschuh alternates between bulky teenage ruggedness and fragile forlornness is really worth seeing." ( Taz )

"Days that remain is an intelligently told drama about the relationship to grief after the death of a loved one. Without kitsch or melodrama, characters are shown whose inability to come to terms with death together and internally means that their own problems are exacerbated. (...) The performance of young actress Mathilde Bundschuh, who can easily keep up with her older colleagues, also deserves praise. Days that remain is all in all a film about mourning, in which the audience will certainly not leave the cinema in mourning. "(SR Online)

"Lovingly, precisely and with a stylish feel for tragic-comic moments, the film tells the exciting time between death and funeral in a family." ( Berliner Morgenpost )

“In his brittle, frugal film language, days that remain develop an enormous emotional density. Actors and book are just as convincing as the deep human attitude. ”(Jury's statement Max Ophüls Preis 2011)

“The subject of grief is not exactly the classic subject for a first film. It is all the more astonishing how carefully and differentially Pia Strietmann approaches the fears and needs within the family and at the same time manages not to charge the film with pathos and overly great melodrama. "( Deutsche Welle Online)

“The festival audience was consistently amazed at the precise description of mourners of all ages. (...) The seriousness with which she negotiates the themes of the film seems surprisingly intelligent and mature for a young filmmaker. "(Film Dienst)

Awards

The film had its world premiere at the 32nd film festival Max Ophüls Preis 2011, at which the film also received an honorable mention from the jury chaired by Dani Levy . At the 22nd Internationales Filmfest Emden-Norderney 2011, the film won the NDR Young Talent Award for Best Director thanks to the highest rating given by the audience. In addition, Pia Strietmann was nominated for the best young directors for her work at the first German directing award "Metropolis". The film celebrated its international premiere at the World Film Festival Montréal, where it even received an extra screening at the request of the audience. The film also won the audience award at the Leipzig Film Art Fair in September 2011.
