Taner Sağır (born March 13, 1985 in Kardzhali , Bulgaria ) is a Turkish weightlifter .

Career

Sağır began his international career with a body weight of 53.1 kg at the age of 15 at the European Youth Championships in Lignano Sabbiadoro , where he managed 82.5 kg in snatch and 85 kg in push and thus finished 15th.

In the next few years Sağır started again and again in youth and junior competitions and always achieved top placements there. Until 2003 he increased his body weight, so that he now started in the middle weight of up to 77 kg. He also increased his duel performance and achieved 365.0 kg in a duel at the Junior European Championships in Valencia , consisting of 165.5 kg in snatch and 200.0 kg in jerk.

In 2004 in Kiev he was used for the first time at a European Championship for seniors and won gold in all three disciplines with 367.5 kg. At the Olympic Games in the same year he was able to increase again to 375.0 kg and won Olympic gold in front of the Kazakhs Sergei Filimonov and his Turkish compatriot Reyhan Arabacıoğlu . The original third place, the Russian Oleg Perepetschenow , was subsequently disqualified for doping .

In the following year Sağır was able to win the European Championship and won his second European title in Sofia . Although he did not appear at the Senior World Cup in Doha , he was again first at the Junior World Cup in Busan .

In 2006 he started for the first time at a senior world championship in Santo Domingo and won the title with 361.0 kg in front of Li Hongli with 359.0 kg and Ara Chatschatrjan with 357.0 kg.

At the 2007 European Championships in Strasbourg Sağır had to admit defeat to the two Armenians Geworg Dawtjan and Chatschatrjan and ended up in third place.

2008 shouldn't be a success for him either. After he could not bring in a valid attempt at the European Championships in Lignano Sabbiadoro either in the snatch or in the push, this fate was repeated at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , where he had to end the competition as a co-favorite after three invalid attempts in the snatch.

Others

Like Halil Mutlu and Naim Süleymanoğlu, Sağır was born as a member of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria and applied for Turkish citizenship at a young age. He is married to the taekwondo athlete Sibel Güler (* 1984) and the brother of the weightlifter Nezir Sağır (* 1983), both of whom participated in the Olympic Games themselves.
