Murder is the Best Medicine is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The film was produced by WDR and broadcast for the first time on September 21, 2014.

Plot overview

Commissioner Frank Thiel has to solve the murder of a pharmacist. Since there are irregularities in the hospital to which the victim was admitted, forensic doctor Prof. Karl-Friedrich Boerne tries to use a private stay in this clinic for investigations. He comes across a hospital billing fraud for a chemotherapy agent. The clinic's chief financial officer blackmailed the main supplier of the drug so that he could manufacture the drug in a diluted and therefore cheaper form. With the profit she redeveloped the clinic and raised her corporate image. The pharmacist, who believed himself caught by the pharmacist, killed him and another doctor who got on his trail.

action

The pharmacist Andreas Hölzenbein is killed in the botanical garden by giving a syringe with a fatal content so that the cause of death is initially assumed to be a heart attack - according to ten-year-old student Mia Koppolt, who observed the crime. Commissioner Frank Thiel has doubts about the credibility of her statement.

In the meantime, forensic doctor Prof. Karl-Friedrich Boerne has shown himself to the Sanus Clinic, because after his self-diagnosis, he is suspected of having cancer of the liver . He would like to take advantage of his stay there to investigate the present criminal case, especially since he meets there regularly with Inspector Thiel.

He found out that the deceased was not taken to the nearest clinic, but to the Sanus clinic further away. The head of the ambulance service justifies this by saying that a doctor from the nearby hospital called shortly before the emergency call and explained that the devices for treating heart attack patients are currently being serviced. The caller spoke with an Eastern European accent and the name she gave also sounded Eastern European. On closer inspection Thiel finds out, however, that the number from which the call was made does not belong to the university clinic, but to the Sanus clinic. So the call wasn't real and he starts to believe little Mia.

At the Sanus Clinic, Boerne first has to share his room with Ulrich Göbel, who is suffering from cancer and who is receiving chemotherapy and who almost drives him crazy by constantly listening to hits. Since Göbel emphasizes several times how well he feels despite chemotherapy, Boerne comes up with the idea that the expensive chemo drug Zytarix could have been diluted, and tells Göbel, who then the treating doctor of the two, Dr. Susanne Süßmilch, responding to that. Boerne portrays this as a know-it-all who shouldn't be taken too seriously. This leads Boerne to the assumption that Dr. Sweet Milk may be involved in the drug fraud.

While Nadeshda Krusenstern and the single father of the little witness Mia get to know each other better and understand each other very well, Krusenstern and Thiel try to get voice samples from the hospital staff. Because Mia claims to be able to recognize the murderer by his voice. The unknown caller, however, immediately excludes her because the perpetrator was a man.

Meanwhile, Boerne is under general anesthesia by Dr. Sweet milk is a tissue sample taken from the liver. On the way back to Boerne's room, Stephanie Harris, the clinic's chief financial officer, enters the elevator. This is done by Dr. Süßmilch informed them of their suspicion that someone was diluting the chemo drugs in order to defraud the health insurance companies and to enrich themselves. Thus, both the manufacturer of the drug, represented by the owner Frank Scheinmann, and Dr. Knapp, the head of the hospital pharmacy, suspected. Dr. Sussmilch asked to check the drug, but when she asked him about the result of the analysis, he denied the manipulation and refused to give her the report, which led to a dispute. Then Dr. Süßmilch Hölzenbein commissioned an analysis of the remedy; otherwise he had no connection to the Sanus Clinic. Ms. Harris is initially outraged that Dr. Süßmilch gave away a dose of the drug costing several thousand euros for an analysis, but when she explained that the drug was superfluous because the patient for whom it was intended died unexpectedly, she is calmer and explains Dr. Sweet milk, that this suspicion should be investigated. Boerne slowly wakes up during the conversation, listens in, but is still partially under the influence of the anesthetic.

Later that day, Thiel visits Boerne, who tells him about the conversation but is not sure whether he dreamed it. As a new roommate he gets the would-be rapper Bischudo, who has testicular cancer , who listens to loud hip-hop music during the day and snores loudly at night. Thiel then quickly leaves the sickroom. Thiel goes to Mrs. Harris and informs her of his suspicions. In the course of the conversation, Harris's cell phone rings several times, each time a Frank Scheinmann calls. When Thiel asked for a conversation with Dr. Sweet milk asks, Ms. Harris tells him that she is already home because she felt sick.

At Dr. Meanwhile, sweet milk at home appears to Dr. Knapp and claims to have simply forgotten the analysis and to want to apologize for the argument. When Frau Süßmilch is distracted, he puts knockout drops in her drink. Shortly thereafter, she asks him about a possible amphetamine addiction , which she suspects, before she drinks from her glass.

Later Thiel rings the doorbell at her front door. As Dr. Sweetmilk does not open, he climbs into the garden and sees her lifeless on the floor of the living room. After an unsuccessful attempt at resuscitation, he notices that the dishwasher has run through, but there are only two glasses in it, which surprises him and raises the suspicion that it was not natural death. It is also noticeable that Dr. Sweetmilk was jogging before she died, which contradicts Ms. Harris' statement that she was ill.

Ms. Haller later found a puncture site on the victim's head, well hidden under her hair. This confirms the suspicion that Dr. Sweet milk died in the same way as Andreas Hölzenbein.

Boerne receives the results of his liver examination. This shows no abnormalities. So he should be released. However, he pretends to be faint and fever so that he can continue to investigate in the hospital. At night, when he cannot sleep because of Bischudo's snoring, he sees through a window how Dr. Just about to be loaded into a Scheinmann-Pharma vehicle. As he goes outside, he overhears a conversation between Dr. Knapp and the supplier where Knapp would like to speak to the "boss". Frank Scheinmann, the owner of Scheinmann Pharma, appears in person a short time after the delivery and Dr. Knapp tells him that he wants to get out because it is all too risky for him. After Frank Scheinmann leaves, Dr. Knapp Boerne, who claims to have lost his way. When Dr. Knapp leads him back, Boerne secretly takes a hair sample, but when a doctor jokingly asks him whether he is "snooping around" again, Knapp suspects.

Dr. Knapp then secretly puts three more tablets in Boerne's drug dispenser . But he expected it and in the morning he puts all the pills in his pocket instead of swallowing them. The examination of the tablets by Ms. Haller shows that the tablets would have triggered retrograde amnesia in him, i.e. he would have forgotten the events of the night. Dr. Meanwhile, Knapp plans to kidnap the witness Mia on the way home, but her father arrives in time so that nothing comes of it. Dr. But Knapp realizes that Mia will be alone in the evening because her father has a rendezvous with Krusenstern.

The next time Thiel visits Boerne, he suddenly hears the voice of the caller who pretended to be a doctor. This turns out to be the cleaning lady who was assigned the call by Mrs. Harris. The two then tell them that they now know why the clinic and especially the pharmacy make so much profit, namely because of the diluted medication. Following the conversation, Harris is arrested, Dr. Knapp, on the other hand, is not to be found in the hospital pharmacy, which is why they are looking for him.

In the evening it suddenly occurs to Thiel that the witness Mia could be in danger. A call to the emergency call center reveals that someone from the Sanus Clinic received Mia's address because the patient supposedly wanted to thank her. In fact, Dr. Close to Mia and pretends to be a colleague of her father. Also, he claims to be hoarse so that the girl does not recognize his voice. After he secretly put knockout drops in her glass, Mia pours the mix back into the bottle. Thereupon Boerne shows up, who had been hiding in the apartment. Knapp attacks him and wants to flee, but Thiel, who is also present, confronts him with drawn gun, whereupon Mia knocks him down with a pan. Investigators find out that Dr. Scarcely was coerced into his actions by Mrs. Harris who blackmailed him with his amphetamine addiction.

Reviews

“The Münster 'Tatort' district, which had degenerated into a smirking thriller over the past few years, was back on the right track: […] And now that. The punch lines sit like worn-out slippers, the timing seems sedated, the plot drags like on a drip. "

"Professor Boerne and Commissioner Thiel [...] are [...] in top form."

- Carsten Linnhoff : dpa

“'Murder is the best medicine' is about deals with adulterated drugs and is itself a sham. You don't approach the subject of illness in an unfamiliar way, you turn it into the very familiar, silly number revue. "

"Less gossip, more crime fiction and sometimes scalpel-sharp punchlines."

- Michael Schacht : bild.de

“Strong hospital satire. One may argue about the meaning and purpose of the 'crime scene' and miss any booming goose bumps suspense among the people of Münster. But the crime clowns from Münster are funny and entertaining with their constant spectator million game. "

- Wilfried Geldner : crime scene fund
