The Kalkberg is 500.6  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Franconian Alb near Weismain in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels ( Bavaria ).

Geographical location and description

The Teisenberg is located in the Weismain-Alb , a northern branch of the Franconian Alb and rises around 185 m above Weismain . In the west it falls into the foothills of the Kleinziegenfelder valley , over which it rises 168 m and in the east on the Frankenalb plateau near Wohnsig . The dominance to the next higher mountain, the eastern flank of the Hohe Stein , is 2.180 km. The Querkelesloch cave, protected as a natural monument, is located on the western slope of the mountain . According to a legend, an underground path is said to have led from there to Niesten Castle . Two small, nameless springs rise a little below the cave. On the lower part of the eastern slope, a drinking water tank was built by Wohnsig to supply water.

The Teisenberg consists mainly of the two lithostratigraphic groups Brown and White Jura of the southern German Jura . The structure is largely symmetrical except for a few heights of the layer boundaries and a landslide on the western flank.

Brown Jura

The lower slopes of the mountain, rising from the Kleinziegenfelder valley , consist of the brown Jura stones of the upper Aalenium layers, the Dogger β. In accordance with the name, the predominant colors are brown rock and soil, predominantly fine-grained light beige, yellow or brown sandstone or earth-sandstone mixtures, sometimes limonite with clay layers . The layers of the Bajocian , Bathonium and Callovian , also known as the Braunjura γ, δ and ε, form a layer of regalia about 10 m thick , rising from about 360 to 370 m above sea level. Form NHN. The regalia is gray in color and contains numerous limestone fragments from the rock above. Due to the poor exposure conditions, a tripartite division of the layer can hardly be seen. The lower Bajocium, about two feet thick is from calcareous sandstone benches and sand lenses interspersed tone. The middle, two to three meters thick bathonium layer is formed from ironoolite limestone , which are relatively hard, tough limestone spheres with a brown bark and a bluish core. After frost blast , they are mostly only present as broken pieces. The remaining callovium layer emerges as a light gray, stiff, plastic, low-lime clay. In the unweathered state, underground, it has a semi-solid to solid consistency and is rich in fossils in layers. In all three layers there are particularly large brown irons - ooids that can be seen with the naked eye.

White Jura

Over the Braunjura rocks, still in the lower third of the mountain, begin at about 370  m above sea level. NHN the locations of the White Jura . The lowest White Jurassic level of the Oxfordium forms a uniform floor of a good 25 meters on the Teisenberg, but still consists of different rocks, which is why there is also a subdivision into White Jurassic α and β. The lower, older half, often known as lower marl limestone , consists mainly of marls . The iron layer silicate glauconite also occurs at the lower limit of the layer . The upper, younger, formation consists of fine-grained, smooth-breaking, banked limestone . It is rich in fossils such as ammonites , belemnites , thin-shelled shells and calcite crystals that arise in cavities. The common name for the layer Werkkalk but in the Upper Main region misleading because the country's banking limestones not frost resistant and therefore as work material are not suitable.

Above the Oxfordium level begins at around 395  m above sea level. NHN the 50 m thick Lower Kimmeridgian layer (syn. Weißjura γ), also known as Upper Marl Limestone, which initially rises only slightly . It is a clayey layer of marl in which occasionally larger limestone banks or lumpy limestone deposits occur. From about 445  m above sea level. NHN begins the Middle Kimmeridgian layer (syn. White Jurassic δ), consisting of mass limestone . Like the White Jurassic layers underneath, it contains numerous fossils such as silicified sponges , trochite rubble lime and mussels . The summit area and the uppermost section of the eastern flank were also deposited in the lower and middle Kimmeridgian layers, but consist of sponge lime .

The upper third of the western flank descends directly from the summit, reaching down to the Oxfordium level at about 395  m above sea level. NHN , covered by rubble from a landslide from rocks of the White Jura.

Flora and fauna

The Teisenberg is completely covered with mixed forest, with spruce , Scots pine , oak , linden and European beech as the dominant species. The fauna around the Teisenberg is not very different from that of other areas with mixed forests and open areas in the Franconian Alb. So there are from insects and vertebrates on small mammals up to singing birds , birds of prey and larger mammals such as red and black game numerous ways.

Landscape protection

The Teisenberg is located entirely in the multi-part fauna-flora-habitat area of dry grasslands, meadows and forests around Weismain (FFH No. 5933-371), in the rock and hillside forests bird sanctuary in the northern Franconian Jura (No. 5933-471) and in the northern part of, 1,021.64 km², founded in 2001 Nature Preserve Nature Park Franconian Switzerland Veldenstein forest (LSG no. 322697).
