The Tera Jet is a fast ferry operated by the Cyprus- based shipping company Seajets , which was commissioned in 1999 as Scorpio for the Italian Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione . After several years of unused idle time, it has been in use for its current operator since July 2014. The Tera Jet is the largest high-speed ferry in service in the world.

history

As Scorpio in Naples, October 2005

The Scorpio was laid down on May 5, 1998 under the hull number 6047 at Fincantieri in Riva Trigoso and launched on March 17, 1999. After its delivery to the Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione on June 4, 1999, the ship began the ferry service from Genoa via Porto Torres to Olbia in the same month .

In 2001 the Scorpio switched to the route from Civitavecchia to Olbia. In 2005 the ship was chartered to the Italian shipping company Siremar before it was launched in 2006 . From May to September 2008, the Scorpio was chartered by Corsica Ferries between Livorno and Golfo Aranci , after which it was again in Castellammare di Stabia . In 2009 the ship changed its anchorage to Arbatax , from 2010 it was in Cagliari .

In September the Scorpio went under the changed name Scorpio I to Karina Shipping, based in Tuvalu , but remained in Cagliari. In April, the Dominican Republic- based Millenia Shipping took over the ship and renamed it Ronke a month later . It was transferred to Eleusis , where it remained in place. After another change of ownership to an owner in Tanzania and a renaming to Amor in June 2012, the fast ferry went to Drapetsona , where it was named Sea Breeze III after another change of ownership under the Panama flag , but did not return to service.

In March, the Cyprus-based shipping company Seajets bought the Sea Breeze III as their new flagship. In May 2014 it was named Tera Jet and returned to active service on July 25, 2014 after almost six years of idle time on the route from Heraklion to Santorini . After a short layover in October 2014, the ship is now in service between Tinos , Mykonos and Paros .

The Tera Jet is the largest high-speed ferry in service in the world. Her sister ship Capricorn has the same dimensions, but has been inactive since 2007. The other two sister ships Aries and Taurus were scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey , in 2011 .

drive

The Tera Jet has a combined machine system consisting of four diesel engines of the type MTU-20V1163 and two gas turbines of the type LM2500, which were manufactured by General Electric and Fiat . The latter are often used for hydrofoils, hovercraft and high-speed ferries. The machine system drives the four hydrojets ( water jet propulsion ) located at the stern . The two central hydrojets of the KaMeWa 180 SII type are fixed, while the two side hydrojets of the KaMeWa 140 SII type can be controlled and thus also function as rudders.
