The Lucky Nine is an English rock group from London . Although the band defends itself against the categorization as a supergroup , the band members are all known from other music groups. Despite continuing obligations in these bands, The Lucky Nine should not be understood as a short-lived side project , but as a permanent band.

The band name ( English : The happy nine ) is an allusion to the often positive connotation number nine .

history

The Lucky Nine originated in 2001, when Daniel P. Carter (guitar) composed songs for his main band A while working on the Hi-fi Serious album that did not fit the concept of this record. With the help of Richie Mills (drums, Ex- Cable / - earthtone9 / - Sunna ), Carter, who normally plays bass, recorded the songs on a demo basis.

Colin Doran live in 2005

After initial attempts to sing themselves were not to the satisfaction of the two, they decided to invite different guest singers to sing a single piece each. Colin Doran from Hundred Reasons , Ian Watkins from Lostprophets , Matt Davies from Funeral for a Friend and Daryl Palumbo from Glassjaw, among others, were contacted. Doran was the first to react and voiced three songs instead of just one as originally planned. The results convinced the participants so much that they completely re-recorded the songs that had already been finished and at that point only sangeless songs and Doran joined the band permanently.

Shortly afterwards, The Lucky Nine had the chance to go on a tour with Hell Is for Heroes as the opening act , so that the band had to be completed at short notice. The choice fell on Jason David Rowe (bass, iodine ) and Ben Doyle (guitar, formerly Above All ). Before their first release, The Lucky Nine also shared a stage with The Used and Head Automatica .

Although almost all songs for a full album were already recorded, an EP ( The Lucky Nine EP ; also known as the Mighty Atom EP ) was released in early 2005 for which three additional tracks were written and recorded.

This was followed, among other things, in May by a mini-festival with Funeral for a Friend , Finch and Brand New and an appearance at the Download Festival in June of the same year. During September 2005, The Lucky Nine played a club tour in Japan as the opening act for A to promote their first full album, True Crown Foundation Songs . In view of the not inconsiderable delays since the first recordings, the band had already written a large part of the pieces for another album by this time.

In November the band was employed as the opening act for the entire UK tour of the Bloodhound Gang . In March 2006 The Lucky Nine played together with the newly formed Will Haven .

The Lucky Nine's albums are also sold on the Japanese market via the Solitary Man Records label, managed by Ingo Knollmann ( Donots ) .

style

The band members list the Deftones , Fugazi , Tool , Refused and Biffy Clyro as their greatest influences .

The music of the “gifted band” can roughly be described as post-hardcore with influences from metal and rock . The debut album combines “the intensity and groove of contemporary metal with the discipline of classic progressive hardcore” and leads the listener “on a trip of huge noise a la Refused / Converge and captivating dynamics.” The Lucky Nine reminds us again and again Bands like Quicksand , Stretch Arm Strong , the aforementioned Deftones or Tool.
