The Lying Game is an American television series that aired on ABC Family between August 15, 2011 and March 12, 2013 . The series is based on the book series of the same name by Sara Shepard and comprises two seasons with 30 episodes. The German-language first broadcast took place on February 2, 2015 on the free TV station Disney Channel .

season 1
17-year-old Sutton Mercer, who grew up in a wealthy family in Scottsdale , Phoenix , finds out that she has a twin sister named Emma Becker, who comes from a poor background and was most recently fostered with a foster family in Las Vegas . At their first real meeting, Sutton persuades her sister to swap roles for a few days so that Sutton can look for her mother in Los Angeles undisturbed . However, Sutton does not return after the agreed time, whereupon Emma decides to continue to assume the identity of Sutton for the time being. Gradually Emma learns that Sutton has many secrets, which doesn't make it easier to assume her identity. She is supported by Ethan Whitehorse, with whom Emma falls in love.
They find out that her birth mother's name is Annie Hobbs, and she used to go to the same school as Sutton's adoptive parents, Mad's father, and Char's mother. She is now a patient in a psychiatric clinic . Sutton returns to Scottsdale and wants to trade her place again, but she is nearly killed by Derek. However, this allows her to return to her old life. However, you have to swap places again. After Derek is found dead, Ethan is accused. He wants to escape with Emma, but the police interrogate them, which is why Sutton escapes with Ethan, as it is too dangerous that Emma and Sutton are in the same place. This tests the relationship between Emma and Ethan, who subsequently split up.
Emma finds it increasingly difficult to lie to her "family" because she has never felt so comfortable in any family before. Later in the season, Emma shares the secret with Mads and Thayer. The two support Emma and Sutton in their investigation. There they come across a lead that leads to Alec Rybak, the father of Mads and Thayer, who is arrested for the murder of Derek. Also, Rebecca Sewell, an old classmate of Alec and Ted, shows up who marries Alec before Alec is arrested.
In the season finale you learn that Rebecca is the birth mother of Emma and Sutton, and that Sutton has been in contact with Rebecca for a long time.
season 2
At the beginning of the season, Alec is on remand for the murder of Derek and asks Theresa Lopez, friend of Dan Whitehorse, for help. This manages to prove his innocence. However, this happens much to the displeasure of Rebecca, as she has her own goals. She wants revenge on Alec, who stole the twins from her, and also wants to destroy Ted and Kristin's marriage because she wants to get back together with Ted. Meanwhile, Emma is warned about Sutton by Alec. Since she no longer trusts Sutton, she and Thayer try to discover her mother's true identity. The two get closer and finally come together. Emma also finds out that Rebecca is her mother and Sutton has known this for a while. She also lets Laurel in on the twins' secret.
Rebecca's stepson Jordan Lyle shows up in Scottsdale to help his stepmother, who is blackmailing him with his past. He is supposed to go after Laurel, but Jordan falls in love with Mads and begins to oppose Rebecca. Sutton, too, slowly begins to doubt her mother's loyalty and questions the plans. Emma, in turn, finds out that Rebecca and Ted had an affair years ago and that Ted is her biological father. This affair also ensures that Kristin files for divorce. Rebecca sees herself at the goal of her dreams, but she did not expect that Theresa would continue to search for the real murderer of Derek. When she receives a tip the day before her wedding to Dan, Theresa immediately sets off and is found dead days later. The twins track down Rebecca and believe that she killed Derek and Theresa. When a chain from Rebecca is found on Theresa's body, Rebecca flees. Alec finally falls off the roof at a funeral service.
In the series finale, Emma breaks up with Thayer because of her feelings for Ethan. He finally freaks out and ravages his room with a crowbar. The crowbar is the same one used to kill Derek and Theresa.

- Emma grew up with a total of twelve foster families. Emma and Sutton get to know each other and decide to swap roles so that Sutton can look for their mother. Emma as Sutton begins a genuine relationship with Ethan, who was previously with Sutton. When Emma's identity is almost exposed, she wonders how long she can or will keep this up. Sutton takes over her life again and Emma now lives in an abandoned hut, where she befriends Thayer. She later confides in Mads and tells her about the events of the past few months. When she learns that Ethan and Sutton have kissed, she breaks up with him because she thinks he wishes Sutton were part of her. In the second season she gets together with Thayer and experiences her first sex with him. But her feelings for Ethan are bigger, which is why she breaks up with him in the series finale.
- Sutton Penelope Mercer
- Sutton is privileged and grew up in a loving family. After meeting Emma for the first time, Sutton decides that she will go in search of their biological mother. Sutton is dating Ethan but hides it from the public. They split up later in the series. In Los Angeles she gets help from Thayer, with whom she starts an affair. When she returns to Scottsdale, she realizes that Emma has taken over her life. So she decides to tell everyone that she is the real Sutton. However, she is knocked down by Derek, who eventually sinks her car in a lake. She is rescued by Annie Hobbs, her supposed mother, and steps back into her old life. Later she escapes with Ethan, who is accused of murdering Derek, and they are temporarily staying with his father Ben. The two become friends, she tells him that she loves him and they kiss. In the first season finale, Sutton knocks on Rebecca's door and says "Hello, Mama" and you learn that the two have been in contact for a long time. In the second season she helps her mother realize her plans.
- Dr. Ted Mercer
- Ted is the father of Laurel and the adoptive father of Sutton. He is Kristin's husband and a successful plastic surgeon . He is Alec's best friend and the two of them try to hide the truth about Sutton's origins. He had an affair with Rebecca years ago and is the biological father of Emma and Sutton.
- Laurel Mercer
- Laurel is Ted and Kristin's 16-year-old daughter and Sutton's adoptive sister. She is a sassy, sarcastic teenager who loves to sing and play the violin . After Sutton swaps roles with Emma, the wrong Sutton and Laurel become good friends. She begins a relationship with the new student Justin, who later suddenly breaks up with her. She becomes a member of a band around the singer Baz, with whom she later meets. In the second season she finds Sutton's moody behavior funny and believes that there is still a "Sutton". Eventually she learns the truth and is privy to the secret of Sutton and Emma.
- Madeline Margo "Mads" Rybak
- Madeline is a cool, intelligent 18-year-old high school student and one of Suttons and Char's best friends. She recently had to say goodbye to her beloved brother Thayer, who moved to Los Angeles, leaving Mads behind with her father Alec. Mads doesn't know that Sutton has been replaced by Emma, but quickly notices that Sutton is acting differently than usual, which she really likes. She falls in love with her ballet teacher Eduardo and they start an affair. He gets into a car accident and is transferred to another hospital, which is why they are no longer in contact. She later goes out with her classmate Ryan. Emma tells Mads about Sutton and her, later Thayer confirms the matter. She befriends Emma and ends the friendship with Sutton. In season two, she has a one-night stand with Jordan Lyle, whom she falls in love with. The two come together, but Jordan's past stands between them, which is why the two separate again.
- Ethan Whitehorse
- Ethan is a "bad boy" as well as the brother of local cop Dan. He works in a country club and used to be in a juvenile detention center . He has been in a secret relationship with Sutton for almost a year and finds out that this is not the right Sutton, helps the twin sisters find their birth mother and becomes Emma's confidante. He breaks up with her to be with Emma. After Derek's body is found, Ethan is accused of killing him, after which he tries to escape with Emma. This is interrogated by the police, which is why he escapes with Sutton. The two seek refuge in his father Ben's reservation. They get closer to each other, later they kiss, but that doesn't mean anything to him. He is arrested by the FBI and charged as a murderer, but is later released. After Emma learns about the kiss, she breaks up with Ethan. In the second season he is still attached to Emma, but starts an affair with Sutton. He also befriends Jordan.
- Kristin Mercer
- Kristin is Ted's wife, Laurel's birth mother, and Sutton's adoptive mother. She befriends Rebecca and over time becomes more suspicious of her husband. When she learns of the affair between Ted and Rebecca, she files for divorce. She and Alec also get closer.
- Charlotte "Char" Chamberlin
- Char is one of Suttons and Mad's best friends. Behind her happy appearance, she hides the fact that her mother Phyllis has returned from a rehabilitation clinic because of drug and alcohol problems. She meets up with her classmate Derek, who later breaks up with her. Char is Rebecca's niece, which is why she is Emma and Sutton's cousin. After her mother is forcibly committed, she has to live with her father, which is why she travels to Florida .
- Nisha Randall
- Nisha is Sutton's greatest rival and former best friend and wants to be better than her everywhere. She had an affair with Sutton's boyfriend Luke, which is why Sutton and Emma broke up with him.
- Annie "Rebecca" Sewell
- The birth mother of Emma and Sutton, the sister of Phyllis and the aunt of Char. She was in high school with Ted, Kristin, and Alec. She begins a relationship with the latter, the two marry in the first season finale.

ABC Family ordered the series in February 2011 . Alexandra Chando and Helen Slater were cast for the pilot in November 2010 . A few days later, Andy Buckley was selected for the role of Ted Mercer . One month before the series began, Rick Malambri joined in the role of Eduardo . On November 3rd, Charisma Carpenter was cast as Annie "Rebecca" Sewell on an arc.
On September 16, 2011, ABC Family ordered ten additional episodes to add to the first season. So the first season comes to a total of 20 episodes. Due to the increasing ratings in the second half of the season, ABC Family extended the series in April 2012 by a second season, the production of which began in the summer of 2012. In July 2012, Charisma Carpenter was inducted into the main cast for the second season.
In July 2013, ABC Family announced the discontinuation of the series.

The first ten episodes of the first season aired on ABC Family from August 15 to October 17, 2011 . The pilot episode reached 1.39 million viewers. In the following week 1.47 million viewers were measured. The remaining episodes of the first season were shown between January 2 and March 5, 2012. 1.3 million viewers wanted to see the first half of the season, which led to a rating of 0.5 percent among 18- to 49-year-olds. The second half of the season increased to 1.5 million viewers and a corresponding rating of 0.6 percent.
The second season aired between January 8 and March 12, 2013.
