The Mole - Who can you trust? is a German reality game show in which the participants try to make money in various physical and mental tasks. It is based on the Belgian format De Mol , which is marketed internationally under The Mole . A German edition was broadcast on ProSieben from 2000 to 2001 under the title Der Maulwurf - Die Abenteuershow .

The new edition of the German edition started on May 6, 2020 on Sat.1 and was moderated by The BossHoss . The show was shot in Argentina in October and November 2019.

The title is derived from the English word for mole , a metaphorical expression for a saboteur in one's own ranks.

concept

In each episode, the participants have to collect as much money as possible for the jackpot in three activity and brain games . This will be paid to the remaining winner at the end of the season. However, one of the ten participants is "The Mole" ("The Mole") and tries to sabotage the tasks. This is supported by the producers. The mole must act carefully because it must not be recognized by the other participants. The other participants have to use the games to find out who the mole is. On the other hand, they can also cast suspicion on themselves to confuse the others and thus increase their own chances of winning, because at the end of each episode the participants have to answer twenty questions about the mole. The more you know about him, the greater the chance of getting into the final and winning the jackpot. At the end of each episode, the participant who knew the least about the mole is eliminated.

3 1 Cafayate , Salta Province , Argentina In the first game of the episode The Hunt , one participant (Yves) runs away from the others to reach a destination about 5 km away. He has to collect four black puzzle pieces. If he manages to escape from the group within 60 minutes, he receives jokers for the questionnaire according to the number of puzzle pieces. If he doesn't succeed, the group receives 500 euros for each white puzzle piece they have collected. The group is divided into three teams, each with a different means of transport (horses, car, helicopter). The car team caught the runner shortly before the finish. However, due to a deal between the runner and the team, Yves as well as Silvia, Colleen and Martin each receive four jokers. Therefore, the large group did not receive any money for the jackpot. 2,000 euros (or 4,000 euros in the case of a doubling deal) would have been possible. 0 €
2 Bodega Quara, Salta Province, Argentina In The Winery game , the group has to fill eight Plexiglas tubes with wine so that they each earn a key. The film titles are on other boxes hidden in the vineyard. These contain empty wine bottles, which in turn have to be filled with red or white wine depending on the type of wine.

Due to salmonella poisoning, Jessica and Wolfgang were unable to take part in the game, and Aaron and Silvia were only partially able to participate. The group was able to win six of eight keys or 4,100 euros. Due to the low number of participants due to sickness in the game, the amount of money was doubled to 8,200 euros.

If she completes the task within 60 minutes, she can continue to participate in the show and receives 1,500 euros for the group. 5 Retired Finca Lesser, Salta Province, Argentina Before the start of the second game, the second worst had to leave the group to reduce it to eight people. With that, Sylvia left.
2 Finca Lesser, Salta Province, Argentina In the second game in the series, three teams were formed, each of which had to start a task. The game was based on a relay race in which a team had to ride to a task and start at least one round. The round could be canceled at any time in order to ride back to the start and finish point to send the next team off there. Each game had a different number of rounds and different amounts of money per round won. The game was limited to 90 minutes and the elapsed time was only reported at the start and finish points. After 90 minutes the third team had to have started and stopped their game and be back at the finish. Otherwise any money earned would be lost.

Team 1 consisted of Samara, Paula and Yves. Your task was to mark the number of cattle sitting on a horse with color, which was rolled beforehand. There was 500 euros per round, with a maximum of four rounds in total. If all four rounds were played successfully, the pot won in this game was doubled from 2,000 euros to 4,000 euros. Paula rolled a twelve in the first round and Yves was allowed to mark. In the second round, Paula rolled a seven and Samara marked. The third time she rolled a nine. The group therefore decided to stop after the second round and return to the start and finish point. The first team needed 45 minutes for their game. Team 2 consisted of Aaron and Yves. Yves replaced Jessica here. She fell off the horse in the first game of the second episode and was therefore allowed to sit out. The task was to play the game “Who am I” in Spanish. There was a Spanish dictionary to help. Both decided to abandon the game and returned after 25 minutes. Team 3 consisted of Colleen, Wolfgang and Martin. Your task was to solve a letter puzzle and then to throw a horseshoe at a pole for each puzzle solved. If the stake was hit, the group received 300 euros. A category and letters were given for the letter puzzle. One letter was too many and the right word had to be found. The puzzles were all solved, but no stake was hit. Because the third team arrived too late, the group lost all of the 1,000 euros they had won.

additive El Castillo de San Lorenzo, Salta Province, Argentina At the end of the day, all candidates were asked who they least trust. Martin, Yves, Samara, Colleen and Paula were named. Jessica, Wolfgang and Aaron were not named. This resulted in the pairing of the game for the next day.
6th 3 Salta, Argentina The third game in the series took place only for the candidates classified as untrustworthy, but was significantly influenced by the candidates named as trustworthy. The trustworthy group had a feast with Sascha. The calories consumed by the group within 30 minutes had to be worked off by the untrustworthy group on fitness equipment within 120 minutes. The eating group knew nothing about this game and was also advised that they no longer have to play today.

The game was won and brought in 5,000 euros for the jackpot.

€ 5,000
7th 4th Cerrillos Station, Salta Province, Argentina For the last game in the series, the entire amount of money won in the jackpot was distributed over six suitcases. Two other suitcases had allocated an amount of € 0. The candidates should assign suitcases to each other. If a candidate were assigned a suitcase with an amount of money and that candidate was eliminated from the program, this amount of money would be removed from the jackpot. Accordingly, those who are most sure about their choice of the mole should take the most highly endowed one, and those who are most unsure should take a case with 0 €. If all suitcases and the entire jackpot remained, then € 3,000 would be added to the jackpot.

The suitcases were allocated as follows: Yves: € 10,000, Martin: € 8,000, Aaron: € 6,000, Paula: € 5,000, Colleen: € 3,000, Samara: € 1,070, Jessica: € 0, Wolfgang: € 0. Then each candidate was offered a deal individually and anonymously. Each candidate could buy a joker from their suitcase for € 1,000, with the help of which an incorrectly given answer to the mole is converted into a correct one. This increased the chance for the individual candidate to stay on the show, but reduced the total jackpot by the corresponding amount. The candidates invested the following money in Joker:

- € 15,000
candidate Money available Money spent Money remained Bought jokers
Yves € 10,000 € 2,000 € 8,000 2
Martin € 8,000 € 3,000 € 5,000 3

10 1 Buenos Aires , Hippodrome , Argentina The candidates each had to correctly answer ten questions on the subject of "horses". For every correctly answered question there was a potential of 100 euros and thus a total of up to 7,000 euros for the jackpot. The one who answered most of the questions correctly in the shortest amount of time was assigned the fastest horse for a horse race. The worse the candidate, the slower the horse assigned to him was. The person whose horse won the race would automatically be in the next episode thanks to an exemption - provided that the others could not assign the winning horse to the candidate who was betting on it after the race. If the candidates were able to say whose horse won, the group received the money they won.

The group guessed that Samara's horse won and was wrong. Yves's horse won and he got the exemption. The won 3,300 euros were lost.

11 2 Buenos Aires, Subterraneo, Argentina In this game, three double teams were formed and one had to compete alone. Each team had to solve a task at a subway stop and after they had solved it boarded a subway line H in which Alec and Sascha rode. These drove in a subway from the “Venezuela” stop past the corresponding three stops one behind the other. They got off at the fourth stop “Parque Patricious”. Meanwhile, the lone fighter had to walk the distance on the surface faster than the subway to get to the fourth stop before Sascha and Alec. Only when the candidates arrived at the goal with Sascha and Alec and the lone fighter was already waiting at the goal did they get the earned money. There were 3,000 (station 1, station Humberto 1), 2,000 (station 2, station Inclan) and 1,000 euros (station 3, station Caseros), a total of 6,000 euros.

Team 1 at Station 1 consisted of Yves and Samara. Her job was to sort suitcases with city names in ascending order of their distance from Buenos Aires. This task was solved incorrectly and the 3,000 euros were gambled away. Team 2 at Station 2 consisted of Jessica and Colleen. They had to solve the game of “hot wire”, in which a metal ring must be led around a wire from start to finish without touching the ring. You didn't manage the task and didn't win 2,000 euros for the jackpot. Team 3 at Station 3 consisted of Paula and Martin. Within two minutes, a musician played 14 songs on a keyboard, of which they had to guess ten. This task was not accomplished either and the 1,000 euros were gambled away. The lone fighter was Aaron. This had to run 2.7 kilometers to be in front of the subway with Sascha and Alec. This managed the task. Since no money-making task was solved, no money was earned in this game.

12 3 Buenos Aires, Parque de la Costa, Argentina The aim of the game was to find a three-digit code. Three teams had to be formed. Paula and Jessica had to spot ten mascots from a ferris wheel. The letters were given to Aaron, who was on the ground, and he had to take the information to Samara and Colleen at the other end of the amusement park. Meanwhile, they drove on a roller coaster and had to pantomime the letters in front of the snapshot camera. Based on these photos, Yves and Martin had to recognize the letters and form a word from them. The word found had to be looked up in a lexicon to find the code based on the page number.

Street musicians stood at these landmarks, who carried a total of six piano rolls that the team had to collect. Team 1 did not know which landmarks it had to head for. The task of Team 2 (with Aaron and Jessica) was to select songs that would lead Team 1 to the correct landmark and broadcast them over the radio. They were free to design the program and also use the songs to signal whether the team was on the right track or was wrong with their assumption. Team 1 had pictures of the landmarks to help.

The first landmark to be found was the Puente de la Mujer (Women's Bridge). This and the corresponding piano rolls were found with the help of the songs " Over seven bridges you must go " interpreted by Peter Maffay and "Water under the Bridge" by Adele . The candidate who also opts for exemption would automatically be in the next episode and would be allowed to spend the night in a good hotel, while everyone who was still chained at that point would have to stay at the place where the task took place. Aaron's job was to assess the candidate's reaction in order to earn a supposedly € 1,000 per correctly predicted reaction for the jackpot.

The task of Yves, Martin and Colleen, however, was exactly the opposite of the assumption they had assumed by Aaron to react so that Aaron is always wrong. If they managed to get Aaron wrong, € 1,000 would go into the jackpot for each situation. At Martin's, the female masseuse was replaced by a male masseur. The question was whether Martin leaves the room or lets himself be massaged by it. Aaron was of the opinion that Martin allows this and stays in the room and was wrong. At Colleen their belongings were removed from the couch by a couple so that this couple can lie down on the couch. It was important to assess whether she complains or whether she takes it that way. Aaron guessed she wasn't intervening and was wrong again. The female decoy asked Yves for the telephone number. Aaron should assess whether or not to give it to her. He said he won't give out the number and misjudged Yves' reaction.

Reviews

The media journalist Alexander Krei wrote on DWDL.de that the audience was well entertained. The first episode offers an amazing amount of variety and excitement. You have a touch of Breaking Bad . David Grzeschik from Oddsmeter.de is also of the opinion that the show is more reminiscent of a fictional series. The camera settings and cuts created very strong images. Due to the professional implementation, however, the show seems strange and over-staged. The boundaries between reality and fiction are so indistinct on the show that the viewer will at some point wonder what is still real in the end.

Furthermore, Krei criticizes the English original title, which is used in the new edition. The term seems like a foreign body. The German name would have been easier to understand, especially since the contributors constantly use the English word for mole.

Ingo Scheel summed up the first episode with “a lot of idle time, some scenic atmosphere, two moderators on duty according to regulations and the usual thickening of show events with excessive gossip talk and committed intrigues”. Only at the end is the viewer encouraged to continue watching with a cliffhanger .
