action

The American Isabel Archer went to Europe with her aunt in 1872 to enjoy her freedom and to travel. At first she stayed with her relatives in England . There she receives marriage proposals from the English Lord Warburton and from Caspar Goodwood, an American industrialist, which she refuses. A friendship develops between her sick cousin Ralph Touchett and her.

After the death of her uncle, she inherits a considerable sum that enables independence and travel. In Florence she met the American Gilbert Osmond. She marries him, not without the influence of Madame Merle, a friend of her aunt. The couple moves to Rome . Gilbert turns out to be a loveless husband; Isabel feels like he married her just for the money. She suffers silently. He forbids his daughter Pansy to marry her love Ned Rosier. Isabel learns that Madame Merle is Pansy's mother and feels bullied.

Isabel goes to England to look after her dying cousin Ralph Touchett, which annoys her husband. However, she promises Pansy to come back. There Goodwood tries to persuade her to leave Osmond for him. Isabel returns to Rome. The ending remains relatively open.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was part of the "flood" of films based on historical novels such as The Scarlet Letter . It is difficult to fit the plot of a 600-page novel in about 100 minutes of film. The performances of the director Jane Campion and the screenwriter Laura Jones are therefore "admirable" ("admirable"). Berardinelli highly praised Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich's game.

Roger Ebert praised the “magnificent” portrayal of Barbara Hershey and the game by Martin Donovan in the Chicago Sun-Times of January 17, 1997.

The lexicon of international films judged: “A dignified adaptation of a novel by Henry James, which however does not quite succeed in clarifying the motives of its protagonists, but instead repeatedly takes refuge in artificial stylizations.
