The River is a double album that Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band released in 1980 under Columbia Records . It reached number 31 in Germany, number two in Great Britain and number one in the US charts as his first album.

General

The album contains tracks that were not included in the previous album Darkness on the Edge of Town ( Independence Day , Point Blank , The Ties That Bind , Ramrod and Sherry Darling ).

In addition to titles that address the problems of the working class in the 1970s (“I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company; But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy; Now all them things that seemed so important; Well mister They vanished right into the air "- " I got a job in the Johnstown Company, but eventually there was no longer much work because of the economy and all the things that were important, dissolved into thin air " - from The River ), there are also songs that are light and sometimes humorous (“Now don't you call James Bond or Secret Agent Man Cause they can't do it, like I can I'm a rocker, baby” - “ Don't call me James Bond or a secret agent, because they can't do it the way I can, I'm a rocker ” - from I'm a rocker ).

“Rock and roll has always been this joy, this certain happiness that is in its way the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hardness and coldness and being alone ... I finally got to the place where I realized life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them. "

“Rock and Roll was always about joy, that happiness and, in a way, it's the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hardship, cold and being alone ... I finally came to the realization that life shows paradoxes, a lot of them, and you have to live with them. "

- Bruce Springsteen

The album was followed by a longer tour of America and Western Europe. Some numbers of the album were played for the first time on tour and remained fixed items in every setlist ( Cadillac Ranch , Ramrod , Out in the Street , Two Hearts ).

From Rolling Stone Magazine , the album was on the list of 100 best albums of Achtizger taken place 86 (1989). In 2003 the magazine put the album at number 250 of the 500 best albums of all time . In the Billboard Top 200 the album reached number 1. The single Hungry Heart , which was released from the album, was Springsteen's first Top 10 hit in the American singles charts, where it reached number 5. From The River 1.5 million albums were sold in the US alone.

The song Point Blank was named after a film from 1967 with Lee Marvin in the leading role. Drive All Night and Stolen Car played an important role in the soundtrack of the film Cop Land (1997). Drive All Night and Out In The Street are also part of the soundtrack of the film Die Liebe in mir (2007), in which the album itself is mentioned several times.

In 2010 The River appeared with six other Springsteen albums on the CD box set The Collection 1973-84 .

criticism

  • Q (12/94, p. 170) - 3 stars - good - “... may yet prove to be the greatest evocation of Springsteen's vision, laden as equally with childhood memories and first sex as with life's current disillusions ... [ the title track is] impossibly beautiful ... ”( “ ... proves to be the greatest evocation of Springsteen's vision, loaded equally with childhood memories, first sex and the disillusionment that life brings ... [the title number is] unimaginable beautiful ... " )
  • CMJ (Nov. 15, 1999, p. 24) - “... The River's got cars, girls, sex, unemployment and alcohol; when you've got a hot band behind you, making all that stuff resonate, well, brother, that's called rock 'n' roll. ” ( "... The River has cars, girls, sex, unemployment and alcohol; if you've got a band behind you that makes all that stuff resonate, yeah brother, that's called rock 'n' roll." )
  • CD Universe: "... show Springsteen not just as a magnetic showman, but as a pensive, literate songwriter." ( "... shows that Springsteen is not only a fascinating show man, but also a thoughtful, educated songwriter." )
  • CD Universe: “Only Springsteen could have got away with releasing a double album with 19 tracks of what was basically the same song. Such was his standing that he did, and it worked like a dream. Almost all the tracks hit you in the stomach ... ”( “ Only Springsteen could afford to put out a double album of 19 tracks that were basically the same song. So it sold and it worked like a dream. Almost all of the tracks get under your skin ... " )
