Thilo Julius Bernhard Ludolf von Westernhagen (born March 26, 1853 in Stendal ; † December 2, 1920 ) was a Prussian general of the infantry and chief of the rural gendarmerie .

Life

origin

Thilo was a son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel August von Westernhagen (1817–1866) and his wife Agnes, born von Bültzingslöwen (1820–1872).

Military career

After visiting the cadet corps Westlife was during the war against France on August 2, 1870 as an ensign to the Replacement Battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment Magdeburg. 26 of the Prussian Army transferred. From September 19, 1870 he was with the mobile regiment in France, took part in the siege of Paris and in mid-November 1870 advanced to second lieutenant .

After the peace treaty , Westernhagen was assigned to the war school in Potsdam from mid-February to the end of June 1872 . At the end of June 1878 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant and from April 1881 to July 1883 he was in command as an adjutant in the governorate in Cologne . Upon release from this command, he was then transferred to the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Jäger Battalion No. 14 in Schwerin . This was followed on May 3, 1884 by a use in the 1st Guard Regiment on foot . Westernhagen was promoted to redundant captain on September 2, 1884 , and appointed chief of the 11th Company at the beginning of December 1884 . On March 29, 1892 he received the character as a major and on September 2, 1892 the patent for his rank. From October 1893 to January 1895 Westernhagen was in command of the IV Battalion. He then led the fusilier battalion in the same function, became lieutenant colonel at the end of January 1899 and transferred to regimental staff at the beginning of May 1899. On May 18, 1901, while being promoted to colonel , he was appointed commander of Queen Augusta Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 4 . On April 22, 1905 Westernhagen was commissioned as major general commander of the 1st Guard Infantry Brigade and at the same time with the management of the business as commander of Potsdam. With the promotion to lieutenant general on May 2, 1908, he was given command of the 37th division in Allenstein . On April 7, 1911, he was appointed governor of Cologne and in this position Kaiser Wilhelm II gave him the character of general of the infantry on September 13, 1912.

Westlife was on June 25, 1913, the statutory pension for disposition made and appointed chief of the country gendarmerie. In this position he had to wear the active service badge and was continued in the seniority list of the army generals. During the First World War he received the patent for his rank on March 22, 1915 and was put up for disposition on August 9, 1916 with the award of the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves in approval of his resignation .

family

Westernhagen married on June 18, 1886 in Oberschönfeld with Anna Gräfin zur Lippe-Weißenfeld (* 1861). The sons Thilo (* 1887) and Jobst (1889–1914) as well as the daughter Elisabeth (* 1892) emerged from the marriage.
