Thomas Stiller

Thomas Stiller (born April 3, 1961 in Wiesbaden ) is a German film director , screenwriter and actor .

1980s and 1990s

After graduating from Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium in Hilden in 1981, Stiller completed an acting and directing training at the Herbert Berghoff-Studio and Actors Studio in New York from 1985 to 1986 . After completing his diploma, he worked at various theater stages as well as in film and television productions until 1993, before shifting his artistic focus to directing and screenwriting.

In 1995 he made his feature film debut with The Burning Snail . The drama about a 14-year-old boy who hopes to escape his isolation in a youth gang has been shown at numerous international film festivals, including the World Film Festival in Montréal , the International Film Festival in Shanghai and the International Film Festival in Moscow .

The psychological thriller Silent Night - Holy Night , published in 1999, brought Stiller a nomination for the Adolf Grimme Prize the following year , and the production ran in the competition at the Munich Film Festival . With his script he also provided the template for the radio play of the same name produced by the SWR .

2000s and 2010s

In 2000 Stiller directed The Great Grandson of the Man Who Drank a Cow , a musical film about the Japanese jazz musician and trumpeter Toshinori Kondō . Since 2003, he has also been producing cinema trailers for the International Film Festival in Oldenburg . In addition to a series of television films such as The Stolen Moon (2002) with Birol Ünel and Dietmar Bär as well as cinema productions such as The Boy Without Characteristics (2006) with Marek Harloff and Lisa Martinek , Stiller was also a director and screenwriter for episodes of the television series Tatort , Innschuldig , Peter Strohm and Wolffs Revier responsible. He achieved particular success as a screenwriter for the family psychodrama Unter dem Eis , which was honored with the 2007 Adolf Grimme Prize in the “Fiction” category.

In 2008 Stiller acted as a director for the television feature film Twelve Winter , which in 2010 was again nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize and the German Television Crime Prize and was awarded the Jupiter . With the help of the LKA officials at the time, as well as the convicted perpetrator Mike Rödesheim, screenwriter Holger Karsten Schmidt retraced the crime story of two series criminals who attacked provincial banks and savings banks throughout Germany between 1988 and 2001 captured six million euros. The originally planned two-part series was reduced to a one-and-a-half-hour feature film following a resolution by the WDR. The shortening of the scenes was done by Thomas Stiller.

How people get involved in society In 2009 Stiller made the feature film Enough is not enough , which addresses the need and grievances in German care facilities, the use of volunteers and the consequences of their strike. Stiller, who had previously only dealt with this field of activity superficially, indicated after the filming that the film had changed his view of civic engagement significantly.

In the same year, Stiller devoted himself to the explosive nature of escalating youth violence with the drama She Deserved It, initially planned for the cinema , in which a socially well-off schoolgirl is tortured to death by socially disadvantaged peers for reasons of revenge. The script was rejected by several broadcasters in advance due to the sensitive issue. In the teamWorx Television & Film GmbH production for ARD Degeto and Bayerischer Rundfunk , Liv Lisa Fries , co-producer Veronica Ferres and François Goeske played the leading roles . The film was shown for the first time on September 14, 2011 on ARD , after having been shown at several international film festivals.
