history

City entrance with French lettering Bienvenue à Tillabéri ("Welcome to Tillabéri")

Tillabéri was founded around 1810 by a Songhai named Songantcha Yacouba. The Tillabéri area came under French military administration at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries . The place became the administrative seat of a district in the military territory of Niger in 1908, which extended over the later departments of Tillabéri and Téra and was previously administered from 1900 by Sinder and from 1901 by Doulsou . In 1988, Tillabéri received the status of an independent municipality together with nine other Nigerien towns. By then there had been twelve parishes nationwide. During the floods in 2008, over 140 houses were destroyed and 180 fields were flooded. Almost 1900 residents were considered to be directly affected.

population

At the 1977 census, Tillabéri had 5,270 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 8,377 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 16,181 inhabitants. For the year 2010, after an enlargement of the municipal area, 50,005 inhabitants were calculated. Tillabéri is one of the main settlement areas of the Songhai in Niger, next to the municipality of Méhana and the village of Wanzerbé in the municipality of Gorouol .

politics

Mayor of the municipality is Morou Kaboyé, Deputy Mayor Moussa Douma. The city council has 16 members, 13 of whom are elected, three of whom are ex officio. The last election took place on October 31, 2010. The unelected members of the city council include the traditional local chiefs ( chefs traditionnels ) of Tillabéri and Sakoïra.

Culture and sights

The municipality operates two cultural centers, the Maison de la Culture Tinguizi Mabo and a newer Maison de la Culture , which opened in 2008 . There is a public library and several municipal sports facilities. At the governor's seat there is a sculpture by the sculptor Issoufou Lankondé depicting a woman from Zarmaganda .
