history
The first European settlers settled in Topsham in 1658, when Thomas and James Gyles and three men named York and their families bought land on the bay and river before King Philip's War . The settlers lived with the Indians on friendly terms for some time and also traded, but when one of the settlers was absent, the Indians massacred the family and burned his house. He then returned to England. The other two families were also murdered by the Indians. Gyles and his wife were shot while harvesting. The children were taken prisoner but were rescued by officers in Fort George , with the exception of one son .
A new settlement was planned around 1715. By 1721 sixteen families had settled. They were mostly of Scottish-Irish descent. The Sagadahoc Agricultural Society settled in Topsham in 1856, established a judge's seat for agricultural competitions. The annual trade fairs attracted many visitors.
Topsham was organized as the Nineteenth Town in Maine on January 31, 1764 and was part of the Pejepscot Purchase. In 1788 Patten`s Point was taken over by Bowdoinham and in 1830 Land was given to Bowdoinham.
