After a rest day on July 10th and the 520 km long transfer by plane from Lorient to Bordeaux , the 9th stage of the 2006 Tour de France followed on July 11th, covering 169.5 km from Bordeaux to Dax through the Aquitaine region along the Atlantic coast . It was the flattest stage of this tour without a single significant climb.
After just eight kilometers, the German Christian Knees pulled away from the main field. Walter Bénéteau and Stéphane Augé tried to follow Knees, but could not get any closer. Only when the big field decided to let the three drivers go did Knees let his two pursuers catch up. The maximum advantage after 60 km was 7:56 minutes before the sprinter teams took over the pace work in the main field. When the distance at 134 km had shrunk to about three minutes, Knees tried to attack the goal as a soloist, but his escape companions caught up with him without any problems. With 16 kilometers to go, Knees competed again, but again without success. After another ten kilometers, the unity of the leading group was finally over. The field placed the outliers 3.5 kilometers before the finish line, shortly before the entrance to Dax. In the sprint of the main field, Óscar Freire won , who secured his second victory.
The after exclusion of the top favorites Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso traded as favorite Levi Leipheimer lost on the flat stage after a defect more time.
