Travelers is a science fiction television series directed by Brad Wright. It is a co-production between Netflix and Showcase. The first season comprises 12 episodes and premiered on Showcase in Canada on October 17, 2016. The entire series was released simultaneously on December 23, 2016 in German-speaking countries in dubbed version and worldwide on Netflix. On February 8, 2017, the two companies gave the green light for a second season that premiered in Showcase in Canada on October 16, 2017. It was published on December 26, 2017 in the German version and worldwide - with the exception of Canada - on Netflix. On December 14, 2018, the 3rd season started with 10 episodes worldwide on Netflix, including the German version. The discontinuation of the series was announced in 2019.

A group of time travelers from an initially unspecified distant future , who call themselves "travelers" or "travelers", meet by means of a method based on quantum entanglement to transfer consciousness into the body of another person (the so-called "host" ) in the 21st century . Since the earth in the future from which they originate has become almost uninhabitable for humans due to various disasters of both warlike and environmental nature, they are pursuing the mission to change the past in order to save the future of humanity . As is explained, by the time they arrive there are already several thousand travelers in our time.
To do this, they use human bodies as hosts , whose time and place of death can be precisely determined with the help of official records; this of time , altitude , latitude and longitude existing disclosure refer to them as "tell" ( eng. : T ime , E levation , L atitude and L ongitude ). The consciousness of the host is overwritten and the traveler takes over his identity to camouflage , which was reconstructed in advance as far as possible from the available information from the past, for example in social networks . In addition, children are also used as messengers for the transmission of mission goals and other instructions from the future, whose brains apparently survive the brief impression of the foreign consciousness without being damaged.
A group of time travelers usually consists of five members, each with a specific specialization, such as a doctor who cares for members of the group in the event of injuries and illnesses (in some cases using medical procedures and equipment based on information from the future) or a historian whose job it is to memorize important historical data before leaving, such as the TELLs of potential host candidates or the results of sporting events, in order to counter financial emergencies with betting . The arrival of all travelers does not always go as planned, for example if the information from the past was inaccurate or incorrect.
When carrying out their missions, the travelers follow a special code of conduct , the six so-called "protocols", which are intended, among other things, to protect their cover identities and their influence on the past (apart from the missions initiated by the "director") as little as possible hold. In practice, however, these rules of conduct repeatedly confront travelers with various ethical and human dilemmas , for example with regard to their relationships with people in the past but also with other members of the group.
The group's first major mission is to use antimatter stolen from a research laboratory to construct and deploy a high-power laser together with other travelers , with the help of which the as yet undiscovered asteroid "Helios-685" is deflected from a collision course with Earth whose impact would result in the death of several million people and is regarded as one of the main triggers for the catastrophic conditions in the future. However, they are also confronted with the possibility of their own death, since a success of the mission could lead to the future changing so drastically that they themselves no longer exist there. Shortly before the laboratory is destroyed by the antimatter explosion required to operate the laser, the group escapes and from then on hovers in uncertainty as to whether their mission has actually had the desired effect, since they are still alive.
During the third season, the future can be seen for the first time in a scene. As it turns out, the travelers come from the 25th century. The 2010s were seen as a turning point from this perspective. From here on, climate change initially led to mass migration, overpopulation in metropolitan areas and famine. Ancient diseases to which humans were not immune were released from the melted polar ice. This in turn led to mass extinctions, collapse of governments and resources, and war for what was left. Eventually there was a nuclear winter .
At the end of the third season, the world is facing the apocalypse and the previous traveler program is considered to have failed. Therefore, Grant MacLaren travels back to the year 2001 to the well-known day and place when he first met his wife. He reveals information about the asteroid "Helios-685" and sends the director the message that the traveler 001 should not be sent. After some calculations, the director therefore starts the Travelers program ; Version 2 .

Grant MacLaren
Grant MacLaren (traveler 3468) is an FBI special agent and, as a traveler, the leader of his five-man team. The real Grant MacLaren follows a lead from his partner Walt Forbes at the beginning of the series and investigates a series of suspicious activities on the Deep Web that indicate the arrival of the travelers and are believed by the FBI to be a possible terrorist cell . His research leads him to a place in the city center, where he meets the other travelers who, shortly before the time of his death, informed him about the existence of several thousand time travelers from the future in the 21st century and their mission after they informed him before have saved a fatal fall into an elevator shaft. Shortly thereafter, his consciousness is overwritten by the traveler 3468 arriving from the future, who henceforth takes over his identity.
MacLaren has a relationship with the traveler Carly Shannon , but as part of his cover identity also has a wife named Kathryn , to whom he has been married for eleven years.
Marcy Warton
Marcy Warton (Traveler 3569) is the doctor on her team and accidentally impersonates a woman who, based on inaccurate information from the past, was believed to be a librarian who, in fact, has only been a cleaner in a library and has been since childhood has severe developmental disorders. The real Marcy Warton was killed in an attack by a gang of hooligans after trying to distract them from her colleague Tory; Her death is averted by the arriving traveler defending herself with hand-to-hand combat skills.

Towards the end of Season 1, the problems resulting from her developmental disorder can be resolved by the arriving traveler, who takes on the identity of Grace Day , by re-impressing her host with her original consciousness from the future in an adapted manner. However, since she would lose all memories of her time in the 21st century, she has very mixed feelings about this project. Before that, she wants to consult with her confidante David and hopes to gain clarity through this, but she cannot get around because Grace is now carrying out the procedure on her own.
Carly Shannon
Carly Shannon (Traveler 3465) is the team's tactician . Her host is a single mother of a baby who was killed by an accidental shot in the course of an argument with his drunk and violent father, Jeff, over a gun she wanted to use to defend himself after he had repeatedly beaten her has been; this is prevented by the arrival of the travelers, who expel the father from the apartment with unusual authority.
In the course of the series, there are always violent arguments with Jeff, who tries to connect to allegedly still existing "feelings" and also wants to take away custody of her child. His jealousy and obsession is compounded by Carly's relationship with MacLaren .
Trevor Holden
Trevor Holden (Traveler 0115) is an engineer and, despite his youthful host, is by far the oldest traveler on his team. The real Trevor is a 17-year-old high school student and football player; his next of kin are his mother Patricia and father Gary, and he is in a relationship with his classmate Rene Bellamy. Since his grades are often not the best, he is often allowed to visit his teacher Grace Day .
As Trevor finds out, he was apparently involved in a number of petty criminal activities (also together with his girlfriend) before his takeover, such as selling drugs stolen from his mother. This is also related to the death of his host, who died from a severe concussion in an illegal boxing match ; this is averted when the arriving traveler surrenders before the last stroke.
Philip Pearson
Philip Pearson (traveler 3326) is the team's historian and takes over the body of a heroin addict who dies of an overdose after shooting himself with a friend - his death is prevented by the arriving traveler holding the already filled syringe drops. According to official information from the past, this should have been his first contact with this drug , but this turns out to be wrong and was apparently covered up for the sake of his parents. With the help of Marcy , to whom he was the only one to tell about his inherited addiction , he tried to go through drug withdrawal , but suffered setbacks due to various circumstances.
Because of the moral conflicts imposed on them by the protocols, Philip repeatedly suffers from strong feelings of guilt, for example because of the death of his friend, who died with him from the overdose, and Detective Gowers, who interrogated him and later suffered a heart attack while being pursued . As a traveler and historian, Philip knew the fate of both in advance and could probably have prevented their death by calling an ambulance in good time, but this was forbidden by Protocol 3.
His closest contact outside the group is his public defender and drug dealer Ray , who occasionally runs errands for him in exchange for betting winnings and sometimes also helps him get his life under control. Philip also hires him to anonymously provide financial support to the families of his friend and Detective Gowers to ease his guilt.

| Travelers have great problems coping with the circumstances of their hosts. Philip is confronted with his heroin addiction, MacLaren with his relationship with his wife Kat and his affair with Carly and Marcy with the relationship with their supervisor David. To prevent an explosion that would kill thousands, the team stole antimatter from a military convoy. The recipient of the material is a new traveler who, however, cannot prevent his host's suicide. The team is forced to improvise for the first time and cannot act according to the mission regulations. After the failed transfer of the antimatter, they decide to give it back to the research facility in which it was developed. They are on the help of Dr. Delaney, one of the researchers involved in the development. Major Gleason suspects an act of terrorism behind the efforts of the team and wants to prevent it. | Always on heroin, Philip has psychological problems coping with the knowledge of so many accidents and deaths but should not intervene. | MacLaren and Forbes investigate a case that ends in a shootout. MacLaren's team is assigned to support an older team: the survivors of that shooting. | A suicide bomber and his victims are said to be travelers, but the bomb explodes too soon and only the Donner bomber survives. Thoroughly discouraged, Donner tries to reveal the existence of the travelers to the authorities, but the entire hearing is populated by travelers who are trying to convict Donner of high treason. Donner is overwritten by a new traveler who faces Donner's prison sentence and reports that things will get worse in the future. Luca approaches Donner in prison, which means that he has lost confidence in the director. Ken, David's boss, believes David's relationship with Marcy is inappropriate. When he meets Marcy, he believes that she took advantage of the system and that her disability was just playing. Marcy saves David's job by repaying her received benefits from the group's assets. In flight, MacLaren learns to activate a stasis field to save himself and Bishop, while everyone else on board will die in a crash. He instructs Kat and Bishop to use the stasis field and tries to survive only with what Philips has learned about the crash. | Marcy erases Kat's memory of the crash and the previous day, and stages her home to make it seem like she'd drunk too much the night before. Philip removes MacLaren's car from the airport, but Forbes believes it is theft and starts looking for MacLaren with Kat. An advanced medical team for travelers treats MacLaren with nanites . Trevor undergoes a painful procedure to grow a heart transplant for MacLaren. Unconscious, MacLaren experiences memories of his host's life with Kat. He discovers that they are deeply in love and that she would have loved to have children. She didn't because MacLaren feared losing Kat after suffering a life-threatening miscarriage. Because of MacLaren's work obligations, the relationship was in turmoil. MacLaren recovers and, in order to explain his disappearance and the alleged theft of the car, tells Forbes that Philip is MacLaren's confidential informant. | At the instigation of her ex Jeff, Carly threatens to lose custody of her son. Grace is to be taken over, which is de facto the death of the host's consciousness. Trevor wants to protect her as he feels in her guilt and kidnaps her to avoid the accident that would have killed her. Believing that he is crazy, she escapes and is still involved in another accident, overwritten. | Kathryn believes MacLaren is having an affair - she confronts him with it and he discovers more and more that he too has a lot of feelings for her, just like his host once did. He therefore stops his intimate contact with Carly. Charlotte, a historian, is overwritten and murdered her team. She tries to murder Grace, but Trevor stops her. Grace reveals that the faction was responsible for the team's kidnapping. Charlotte is shot and killed by Jeff while trying to kill Carly. Ellis reveals that he has built a "quantum frame" that he can use to bring the director into the present to protect him from the faction. This is located on a farm and is protected from detection by a protective shield. David is held at gunpoint by another assassin, but is rescued by Marcy. The team arrives at the farm, whose coordinates Trevor has received, with the order to destroy the quantum frame. Carly declares at gunpoint that she was ordered to kill MacLaren. Fighters begin to rearrange the farm. Ellis shoots Trevor to keep him from damaging the frame. Grace jumps in front of Trevor and is also shot. | Under the influence of drugs, Philip tries to remember the antiviral formula sent by a messenger. Jenny, the traveler who assists Phillip with his addiction, forwards this information to fellow traveler Derek. The remedy can thus be synthesized to be distributed to teams and people who are to be rescued. This could prevent the spread and mutation of a flu virus that has killed 70,000 people in the past. But two weeks after it spreads, people around the world are starting to develop a virus that is even more dangerous than the original one. The series received a certain amount of attention in advance through the participation of Brad Wright, who was already responsible for the series Stargate - Kommando SG-1 , Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe .
The narrative speed and the detailed description of the characters are rather unusual for an SF series , even if the subject of time travel is nothing new for the genre. Katrin Hemmerling judged the pilot episode :
“Otherwise, Travelers splashes around in the pilot rather insignificantly. It is not a series that can captivate the audience at the beginning, but neither is it that moves you to switch off after a few minutes. Due to the slow narration, the viewer gets to know the characters pretty well and can build a bond with them. "
On Rotten Tomatoes , the first season received an audience rating of 95% approval.
