Turbonegro is a Norwegian band from Oslo , which with their music style, a mixture of heavy metal , rock and punk , is mostly considered punk 'n' roll . The band itself prefers the term "Death Punk", which has nothing to do with the style of music that has existed since the late 1970s .

The main influences of the band are Black Flag , Aerosmith , Venom , Radio Birdman , Motörhead , The Germs , Circle Jerks , Ramones , Alice Cooper , Negazione and The Stooges .

Band name

The band initially toyed with the idea of calling themselves Nazipenis , but rejected this idea after indications that this was not exactly sales-promoting. A single was then released under the name bullfighting , but it was misunderstood and classified by the public in the right-wing scene before the name was changed to Turbonegro . But even this name - in Norway the group is known as Turbo neger - can be misinterpreted, so that the band announced that their motivation was merely to counter the currents of nationalism and racism that are subliminally widespread in Scandinavia and Europe . Founding member Thomas Seltzer put it like this:

“The full name of our band is TURBONEGRO, but we are gutless wimps, so we spell it TRBNGR. A Turbonegro is a large well-equipped, armed black male, in a fast car, out for VENGEANCE. We are his prophets. "

“The full name of the band is TURBONEGRO, but we're cowardly wimps so we spell it TRBNGR. A turboneger is a tall, well-armed, black male in a fast car who seeks REVENGE. We are his prophets . "

- Thomas Seltzer

Lead guitarist Euroboy provides the following information on the origin of the band name:

“I think Pål saw it spray-painted on a brick wall in a tube station in a suburb of Oslo back in the day. It's actually two latin words, it means fast and black and we thought that was a cool name for a band. Because our music is very fast and very dark. And also, it's a name for a color. In the car industry, it's the name for the paint, for the darkest paint. If you want to paint your car black, the most black color of all is 'Turbonegro'. "

“One day, Pål saw it sprayed on the wall of a subway station in the suburbs of Oslo. There are actually two Latin words. They mean 'fast' and 'black' and we thought that would be a cool name for a band. Because our music is very fast and very dark. It is also a name for a color. In the automotive industry it is the name for the paint, for the darkest paint. If you want to paint your car black , the blackest of all colors is 'Turbonegro'. "

Band history

In 1998 the band broke up because of the drug problems of their singer Hank von Helvete ; In 2002 they reunited, initially to play at some festivals.

About the album Party Animals , singer Hank said that the world needs a rock album again that could be used as stadium break-in music, citing the music of the band Queen as an example .

Turbonegro achieved fame through television appearances on the MTV show Viva La Bam or through her frequently played videos Get It On and Fuck the World . In addition, the Turbonegro song The Age of Pamparius by Apocalypse Dudes was used as the theme song for the MTV show Wildboyz . Furthermore, the song All My Friends Are Dead was used in the movie Jackass 2. This song is also the title track of the Dirty Sanchez film Dirty Sanchez - The Movie . The music video All my friends are dead was also created together with Dirty Sanchez .

Rune Rebellion left Turbonegro in autumn 2007 on the grounds that he wanted to take care of his family more. He was also responsible for the band's own record label Scandinavian Leather Records , on which the album Retox and new editions of older albums have been released so far . He played his last concert with the band on October 27, 2007. Pål Pot Pamparius takes over Rune Rebellion's guitar parts. The band's drummer, Chris Summers, also left the band in 2007, after the release of Retox , due to personal differences. He was replaced by Thomas Dahl.

On October 30th, 2009 Thomas Seltzer announced in the official Turbojugend forum that Turbonegro currently has no plans for the future and that the musicians want to concentrate on other projects first. The main reason for this, according to Knut Schreiner, is that the necessary inspiration for another album is missing.

Singer Hank van Helvete has also joined Scientology , which also causes disputes within the band. This step was also received extremely critically in the fan club. Turbonegro took a break for the time being.

Front man Hank announced on July 9, 2010 that he was leaving the band. He no longer feels up to the task. Then the band broke up. From 2009 to 2010 Husby sang with the supergroup Doctor Midnight & the Mercy Cult . and since 2018 he has had his own band again with Hank von Hell . Other band members were once with Satyricon and Marilyn Manson (band), among others .

On June 16, 2011, the band announced that Hank van Helvete was replaced by Tony Sylvester, the ex-singer of Dukes of Nothing . He gave his first concert with the band on July 15, 2011 as part of the “World Turbo Youth Days 7” in Hamburg. The band played in the following line-up: Tony Sylvester - vocals, Happy Tom - bass, Euroboy - lead guitar, Rune Rebellion - rhythm guitar, Tommy Akerholdt - drums.

Happy Tom officially confirmed this lineup there. Guitarist Pål Pot Pamparius is also “110% into Turbo”, says Happy Tom, but was unable to take part in the Reuniongig for family reasons.

style

Turbonegro at the Southside Festival 2005

Turbonegro provides z. As on the cover of the single Bad Mongo Hitler with Down syndrome is, or sing in Hobbit Motherfuckers ( "not enough suffering") of "not enough suffering" and "not enough natural selection" ( "not enough natural selection "). Both are meant purely provocatively in the sense of punk culture.

Their trademarks are jeans ( denim ). In an interview, however, the religious ex-singer of the band Hank von Helvete expressed himself very negatively towards homosexuality ("If gays can get married, you just as well can allow anyone who enjoys fucking sheep to marry one", in German: "Wenn To be able to marry gays, you can just as easily allow anyone who likes to fuck sheep to marry one ”). As a result, the Norwegian fan site www.turbonegro.no closed itself in protest.

In an interview (Turbonegro - The Movie) they commented on this extraordinary style: Today's kids are no longer impressed by biting bat heads off. The hard rock scene can no longer be provoked, the only thing rockers are really afraid of is homosexual men who play loud music. Nobody in the band is really homosexual. Ironically, bassist Happy Tom also plays in the band Scum , whose drummer Bård G. Eithun was imprisoned for the murder of a homosexual.

Another characteristic of Turbonegro is the idiosyncratic interpretation of the term “Darkness”. Happy Tom said that some things should be kept hidden.

The band describes itself as the largest underground band or the smallest mainstream band. The highlights of live performances often included the so-called Ass-Rocket, where Hank von Helvete stuck a fireworks fountain or a sparkler between his buttocks or held it there and burned it down.

Turbo youth

The Turbojugend (TJ) is a worldwide fan club of the Norwegian band Turbonegro. In 2007 the number of its member clubs, called “Chapter”, grew to over 2000. The Turbojugend has several thousand members who can be recognized by their denim jackets (frocks).

Trivia

Turbonegro on November 30, 2005 in London at the Koko

In June 2003, a security guard of the Stuttgart airport in the hand luggage of the band found a 45 cm-long dagger, which was incorporated into the walking stick of the singer ( Stockdegen ). Although, according to the band, the dagger was part of the stage outfit, a friend of the band had himself arrested and later released on bail. Commenting on the incident, Happy Tom said, "What kind of world do we live in where men with long black hair and long black beards can no longer take 18-inch daggers on airplanes?"

Since then, Turbonegro has loudly complained at every concert in southern Germany about the alleged strictness of the police in Baden-Württemberg. According to the German Weapons Act, such stick swords are actually prohibited.

Well-known fans of Turbonegro are the HIM singer Ville Valo , musician Bela B. , Jasmin Wagner , Queens of the Stone Age and MTV actor Bam Margera .

In 2001 a tribute album was released under the title Alpha Motherfuckers , on which, among others, HIM was represented with the title Rendezvous with Anus and Bela B. together with Jasmin Wagner (recorded on the sampler under the pseudonym "Denim Girl") the title Are You Ready for Some Darkness? reinterpreted.

Another polarizing element is the SS plate cap, which guitarist Knut Schreiner wears in various group photos (including in the Party Animals booklet ). The imperial eagle with swastika was removed, but the SS skull was not.

The tracks Ride With Us , Sell Your Body (To the Night) , Get It On and All My Friends Are Dead provided the background music for the freestyle motocross tricks by Drake McElroy and scene greats such as Travis Pastrana and Jeremy Stenberg as well as AMA Supercross -Legend Ricky Carmichael in the spectacular On the Pipe series of Powerbandfilms. The Age of Pamparius introduces the intro to the Transworldmx production Crush . Turbonegro thus made a firm mark on the international motocross scene. The title can also be heard in the opening credits for the series Wildboyz .

Scandinavian Leather Records

Scandinavian Leather Records (SLR) is the band's own label founded by Turbonegro in 2007. The band released their album Retox in Norway on SLR. In the same year they also had their previously released albums with bonus songs reissued on SLR.
