Mission history

USS S-25 (1923-1941)

The boat was laid down on October 26, 1918 by Fore River Shipyard , a daughter of Bethlehem Steel , and entered service on July 9, 1923 under the command of Lieutenant Commander George H. Fort.

New London (Connecticut) served as the base in 1923 . S-25 participated in winter exercises in the Caribbean and Panama Canal Zone between January and April 1924 . Then she was ordered to the west coast of the USA where she mainly operated off the coast of Southern California until 1931 . Between March and May 1927 and February 1929 she returned off the coast of Panama . In 1927, 1928 and 1930 the S-25 drove to Hawaii .

On April 15, 1931, the submarine left its San Diego base to reach its new base in Pearl Harbor on April 25 . S-25 operated from Hawaii until 1939. On June 16, 1939, the submarine left Hawaii and sailed into the Atlantic. New London was reached on August 25th. Extensive repairs followed by February 1940. The boat was then used for testing purposes. In December 1940 S-25 was ordered to Key West , where it was used as a training boat until May 1941.

HMS P.551 / ORP Jastrząb (1941–1942)

After another overhaul in New London, the submarine was decommissioned on November 4th by the US Navy and taken over by the Royal Navy with the registration number HMS P.551 . Shortly thereafter, the British Navy handed the submarine over to the Polish, who put it into service under the command of captain marynarki Bolesław Romanowski under the name ORP Jastrząb .

The submarine was found on May 2, 1942 off the northern Norwegian coast at position 71 ° 30 '  N , 12 ° 32'  E by the Norwegian destroyer KNM St Albans (I 15) and the British minesweeper HMS Seagull with a German submarine confused and accidentally sunk . At this time, ORP Jastrząb was escorting the Northern Sea Convoy PQ-15 to Murmansk . Five Polish sailors were killed in this accident.
