The University of Texas at El Paso (also UTEP called) is a state university in El Paso in the US state of Texas . It is part of the University of Texas system . Some of the UTEP's buildings are designed in Bhutanese architecture.

history

UTEP was founded in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy in El Paso . It was renamed the UT Department of Mines and Metallurgy in 1919 and the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy in 1920 . The next renaming followed in 1949 to the Texas Western College of the University of Texas . In 1961, the first members of the US Peace Corps were trained here. In 1967 the university was given its current name.

Of the approximately 24,000 students, over 80% are Hispanic . This makes the university the only research university in the USA with a majority of “Hispanic” students.

Sports

The UTEP sports teams are called Miners . The university was a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for 35 years before moving to Conference USA in 2005 .

Her only NCAA Division I basketball championship in college basketball became famous in 1966 with an all-African-American starting five . Coach Don Haskins was honored with two streets named after him in El Paso. On the one hand with Don-Haskins-Street, on the other hand with Glory Road, named after his autobiography, which was filmed by Walt Disney, between the Don Haskins Center and a second basketball hall. Haskins became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both coach and member of the 1966 Texas Western team .
