Lists on the subject

The uum-44 subroc (short for Submarine-Launched Rocket ) was a US of submarines to be launched anti-submarine weapon from the time of the Cold War .

history

The uum-44 subroc the United States Navy was in the 1950s by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company made and until the end of the Cold War into service. The first tests took place in 1959, the first shooting down from a submarine occurred on March 28, 1963 from the USS Permit (SSN-594) ; However, it did not come into service until 1965. By 1972 Goodyear had produced 285 units of the weapon.

The successor model UUM-125 Sea Lance never got beyond the project status. The Soviet / Russian SS-N-15 and SS-N-16 missile torpedoes are comparable.

technology

The SUBROC was the shape and size of a torpedo and could be fired by submarines from the 533 mm standard torpedo tubes. After leaving the torpedo tube, the rocket motor ignited and drove the guided weapon to the surface of the water. After piercing the surface of the water, the guided missile followed a ballistic trajectory. The guided missile control was carried out via an inertial navigation system . The nuclear warhead was repelled in the pre-programmed target area. The nuclear depth charge detonated at a preselected water depth. The W55 nuclear warhead had a maximum explosive power of 250 kilotons of TNT equivalent . Thus the deadly radius of the weapon was about 9 kilometers from the detonation point. Thus, the weapon could also be used against entire surface fleet units, although it was primarily designed as a weapon against submarines.

commitment

The SUBROC was carried on the Thresher ( Permit ), Sturgeon and Los Angeles class submarines , but was never fired in combat.

Modifications

The engine of the SUBROC rocket served as the basis for the development of the pilot (NOTSnik) satellite rocket .
