U 20 ( ship identification S 199) was a class 206 submarine that wasin service with the German Navy from 1974 to 1996.
history
The boat was built by Rheinstahl-Nordseewerke in Emden and laid down on September 3, 1971 as hull number 444 . The launch took place on January 16, 1973. After completion of the tests, U 20 was put into service on May 24, 1974 for the 3rd submarine squadron in the Kranzfeld harbor . Patenstadt was the Baden-Württemberg Engen , whose coat of arms was reflected in the boat crest.
U 20 was not one of the boats that had been converted to class 206 A as part of an increase in combat value and so it was placed under the 1st submarine squadron at the Kiel naval base on April 1, 1988 .
The boat was last used in 1994, after which it was only in the naval arsenal in Kiel , mostly without a crew. A crew from other boats therefore had to be put together for the transfer trip for decommissioning. On September 26, 1996, the U 20 , after the U 27 as the second boat in its class, was decommissioned at the Wiesbaden Bridge. The condition of the boat was very in need of overhaul after the long layover and so the sale to another marine was out of the question. It was sold to the Abbruchunion Bochum via Vebeg . In 2001 the tower was integrated into the work of art “A Sailor's Dream” in Stockach .
