The Umbalkamm is a mountain ridge of the Venediger group in East Tyrol or South Tyrol . The highest peak of the Umbal ridge is the Rötspitze ( 3496  m above sea level ). The Umbal ridge owes its name to the Umbal valley to the east . The East Tyrolean parts of the chain are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park , the areas in South Tyrol are protected in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .

location

The Umbalkamm lies in the southwest of the Venediger group. It is bounded in the east by the Umbalbach (the upper reaches of the Isel ), in the southeast by the Daberbach and in the southwest by the Schwarzach . The Umbalkamm runs between the Hohe Rosshuf in the north and the Rotenmanntörl in the south. North of the Umbal ridge, starting from the Hohe Rosshuf, the Rosshufkamm runs to the west and east. In the south, the Panargenkamm represents the continuation of the Umbalkamm to the southeast. Adjacent mountain ridges are also the Glockhauskamm and the Pferdrerkamm in the west and the Maurerkamm and the Rosenspitz group in the east. The summit line between Rötspitze and Hohem Rosshuf also forms the state border between Austria and Italy.

Starting from the Hohe Rosshuf, the Umbalkamm runs south over the Hintere Umbaltörl to the block summit of the Ahrner Kopf and on over the Vordere Umbaltörl to the Virgilkopf. A long block ridge leads from the Virgilkopf to the Untere Rötspitze, where the Pferdrerkamm branches off to the east. To the south, the Umbalkamm continues as a firn ridge to the double summit of the Rötspitze, where the westward running Prettaukamm begins. From the Rötspitze the Umbalkamm falls deep into the Welitzscharte, after which the Felshorn follows the Daberspitze. In the area of the northern summit of the Daberspitze, the Umbalkamm has a ridge branch to the southeast, where the Tredeberspitze is located between the northern and southern Tredeberscharte. This is followed by the Hohe Kreuz and, as the easternmost summit of the Umbal ridge, the Achsel. The main ridge of the Umbal ridge runs from the Daberspitze, however, further south to the northern and southern Rotenmannkopf and the Schwarzachspitze and then over the Schwarzachtörl to the Törlspitze. This is separated from the Törlkopf to the south by the Black Törl. After the Törlscharte, the last summit in the extreme south of the ridge is the Rotenmannspitze, after which the ridge continues to the Rotenmanntörl as the Panargenkamm.

There are numerous glaciers in the northern part of the Umbal ridge. To the west of the Hoher Rosshuf lies the Nördliche Windtalkees, to the east the Schlaitner-Keesflecken and west of the Ahrnerkopf the Südliche Windtalkees. The ridge between Virgilkopf and Daberspitze is accompanied on the west side by Virgilkees, Rötkees and Schwarzachkees, on the east side is Welitzkees. In addition, there is the Daberkees south of the Daberspitze and east of the Tredeberspitze.

The Lenkjöchlhütte , the Philipp-Reuter-Hütte , the Clarahütte and the Jagdhausalm are particularly relevant as alpine bases for the Umbalkamm .
