The University of Malmö ( Swedish Malmö universitet ) is a state university in the southern Swedish city of Malmö . With more than 24,000 students enrolled and around 1,600 employees, it is the ninth largest university in Sweden.

The Orkanen building houses the library and teacher training.
Malmö is located in the province of Skåne in southern Sweden .

history

The young university was founded in 1998, two years after the government decided to create a teaching institution in Malmö. Malmö University of Applied Sciences is internationally oriented, with almost a third of the students coming from abroad. There are also exchange programs with more than 250 partner universities worldwide. The main topics of higher education include migration, sustainability, urban studies, new media and technology. Today the university is divided into five faculties: teacher training as the largest faculty, culture and society, health and society, odontology, and technology and society.

Some of these courses existed before the university was founded, but belonged either to the city of Malmö or to Lund University . The latter still has certain teaching units carried out in Malmö today.

The majority of the university buildings are on a small artificial island in the middle of the city, called Universitetsholmen . Parts of the training, such as teaching posts and the library, are located in the Orkanen institute building , which was built in 2005 on the marina.

The university plays an important role in the transformation of the city of Malmö from an industrial shipyard town to a modern city with an emphasis on education and culture. The university campus is symbolically located on the former site of the Malmö Kockums shipyard.
