Down by the river (Engl. Watership Down ) is an animated television miniseries by Noam Murro . The production is based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Richard Adams , which was adapted by Tom Bidwell . The miniseries was released in the UK on December 22, 2018 and internationally on December 23, 2018 on the video-on-demand platform Netflix . The BBC broadcast consisted of two consecutive episodes per day.

The story takes place in the south of England, in Hampshire, and centers around a small group of rabbits . They are anthropomorphized and have their own culture, language, proverbs, poetry and mythology, even though they live in their natural environment. Few rabbits escape the demolition of their home den and seek a place to build a new home while facing danger and temptation along the way.

In July 2014, it was announced that the BBC would be broadcasting a new animated miniseries based on the best-selling novel. In April 2016 it was announced that the series would be a co-production between the BBC and Netflix and consist of four one-hour episodes. The series has a budget of £ 20 million.
