Ussinsk ( Russian Усинск ; Komi Ускар , scientific transliteration Uskar ) is a city in the northwestern Russian republic of Komi with 40,827 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the foothills of the Polarural about 750 kilometers northeast of the republic capital Syktywkar on the right bank of the Ussa, not far from its confluence with the Pechora .

Ussinsk is administratively directly subordinate to the republic. The city has a territory of 30,600 km².

Since 1980 the city has been connected to the Synja station of the Pechora railway Konoscha - Kotlas - Vorkuta by a 108 kilometer long railway line .

history

Ussinsk was established in 1966 as a settlement when the exploration of the oil deposits in the north of the Komi Republic was beginning and received city rights in 1984.

In Ussinsk there is a history and local museum as well as an art gallery. There is also a local history museum in the town of Kolwa, which is 18 kilometers away and has been known since 1825 .

economy

Ussinsk is the center of oil and gas production in the Komi Republic: three quarters of the oil produced in the republic comes from the Ussinskoye , Voseiskoye , Verkhnevoseiskoye , Baganskoye and Salyukinsky oil fields on the territory of the city . There is also the construction industry and the food industry. In 1994 the world's worst oil catastrophe occurred in this area when more than 100,000 tons of oil leaked from a dilapidated pipeline.
