Under the title From Courbet to Cézanne - French painting 1848–1886 , one of the most important exhibitions of 19th century French painting in the GDR took place from December 10, 1982 to February 20, 1983 in the Berlin National Gallery as part of a Franco-German cultural agreement . It was organized by the Association Française d'Action Artistique, the Ministry for Foreign Relations of the French Republic, the French Embassy as well as the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for Culture of the GDR. Lenders were 32 French institutions who made a total of 87 images (83 catalog numbers) available.

The exhibition

The aim of the exhibition, conceived by Anne Distel and Geneviève Lacambre, was to provide a representative overview of the various currents of French art in the specified period, with realism , naturalism and impressionism at the center. In addition, further examples of the officially recognized art movements as well as the forerunners Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix were shown.
