Walhalla is a Danish comic adaptation of the comic book Walhalla drawn by Peter Madsen and filmed in Denmark in 1986 .

action

The siblings Tjelfe and Røskva live peacefully with their parents in the realm of Midgard , the realm of humans, until one day the two gods Thor and Loki ask for accommodation. At dinner the god of thunder serves people one of his two billy goats, which can be eaten and brought back to life the next day. He warns people not to break any of the bones. But Loki persuades the boy Tjelfe to do it anyway.

When Thor brings the billy goat back to life the next morning with his magic hammer, the animal has a broken leg. Full of anger, he obliges Tjelfe to serve him in Asgard , the realm of the gods, in order to pay his debt. When the two gods leave with the boy, Tjelfes sister Røskva sneaks on Thor's chariot. Since she is only discovered during the trip, she accompanies the three to Asgard.

In the realm of the gods, however, the children don't expect any adventure, just a lot of housework in Thor's castle. They have to clean, cook, and look after Thor's children. One day Loki brings a dwarf giant called Quark from the underworld to visit. But Quark is just doing mischief, so that Thor loses patience and disappears in anger. Loki also treats the children badly, so Røskva decides to go to Walhalla and complain to Odin , the king of the gods. Quark accompanies them there. Røskva actually reached the castle of the gods and before the throne of Odin. But since Quark can't stop his mean jokes, they are thrown out again. Her brother Tjelfe is already waiting for them outside the gate. Together they decide not to go back to Thor, but to live in the forest. They build a small tree house, and Quark helps a lot. The children, especially Røskva, make friends with the dwarf giant. But it doesn't take long and they are discovered by Thor and Loki. Thor is still mad at Quark, so despite Loki's opposition, he wants to bring him back to Udgård . This is the beginning of a great adventure for the siblings.

You will experience the competition between Thor and Udgård-Loki . First Loki is supposed to win an eating contest against a resident of Udgård. He loses because his opponent is the fire that eats the food and the trough.

Then Thor is supposed to pick up a cat from the floor. Since this is the Midgard Serpent , he doesn't make it. He is supposed to empty the horn of Udgård-Loki in one go, but since this horn is connected to the sea, this bet also fails. However, the amount of water that Thor drinks is so immense that it causes the ebb tide. Tjelfe is also supposed to compete: a run that he cannot win because he is running against his own reflection.

The last thing Thor wants is a fight. An old lady appears. And as with every bet, Tjelfe is the only one who realizes that it is again a trick: The old lady is the old age that even Thor cannot resist, who seems to be dying.

In these points the film adheres closely to the traditions of mythology.

Then Thor and Loki have to take the little quark back with them. However, since Loki casts a spell on a chicken to make it look like curd and curd cheese to look like the chicken, they can leave it behind.

However, Udgård-Loki notices the spell too late and Quark stays with him for the time being.

Satisfied with himself and with the knowledge that Udgård-Loki had been tricked, Thor gave little Tjelfe a sword and promised to go hunting with him. Røskva, on the other hand, wanders sadly through the forest. She goes to her old tree house and there she discovers Quark, who left Udgård out of longing for his little friend and now lives in her tree house in Asgard.

production

The film was a landmark for Danish animation, although it received mixed reviews. Production had problems with changes in the creative team and financial difficulties. In the end, the production cost 30 million Danish kroner (approx. 4 million euros), which the film never grossed. No sequel was produced. Only Swan Film Production made eight short films showing Quark's adventures. More short films were planned, but the studio went bankrupt due to the financial problems of Walhalla.

The British composer Ron Goodwin ( Miss Marple theme music ) contributed his last score to the film.
