Maria im Sand is a pilgrimage church in the town of Dettelbach in the district of Kitzingen ( Bavaria ).

history

Originally there was a wayside shrine with a Pietà at the site of the chapel . A person who was critically injured at a parish brawl in Melkendorf is said to have made a pilgrimage to this wayside shrine and was completely healed. This was the origin of the pilgrimage .

As early as 1506, the then Prince-Bishop of Würzburg Lorenz von Bibra had a first stone chapel built. In 1523, Prince-Bishop Konrad von Thüngen had the old wooden ceiling replaced with a stone one. From 1608 the chapel was expanded by Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The expanded chapel was consecrated on September 8, 1613. A baroque altar of grace was built between 1688 and 1690 . In 1779, Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Johann Anton von Gebsattel consecrated the third, today's altar of grace, which the Italian plasterer Agostino Bossi had created.

The Würzburg hymn book Alte und Newe Geistliche Catholische unreadlesene Gesäng from 1630 contains a song from the miraculous image of the Sorrowful Mother of God of Dettelbach.

The Franciscan Convention

On March 20, 1616, at the request of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, Franciscans of the Upper German ( Strasbourg ) province of Argentina came to Dettelbach to look after the pilgrims. The Convention was one time, up to 24 priests and friars . In 1625 it passed to the Bavarian Franciscan Province of Bavaria , which had become independent that year and which was merged into the German Franciscan Province in 2010 . In 1631, during the Thirty Years War , the church and convent were looted and some Franciscans were killed. After the convent was temporarily closed in the course of secularization , the Franciscans were able to return to Dettelbach in 1826.

In 1965, in addition to pastoral care for pilgrims, the Franciscans also took on pastoral care in the Dettelbach parish of St. Augustine. The Provincial Minister of the German Province, Fr. Cornelius Bohl OFM, announced in February 2016 that the Franciscans will be leaving Dettelbach in early 2017 due to a lack of staff. The closing service took place on January 22nd, 2017 with Bishop Friedhelm Hofmann . The premises of the monastery are to be used by the diocese of Würzburg , possibly to accommodate historical archive and library holdings from parishes and diocesan institutions. The pastor of Dettelbach is to take over the pilgrimage pastoral care.
