Walsdorf is a district of Idstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district in southern Hesse .

geography

Walsdorf is located in the Taunus , a German low mountain range, and is the northernmost district of the city of Idstein . It borders on Würges , the southernmost district of the city of Bad Camberg .

The federal highway 8 runs east of the village , west the federal highway 3 . State road 3026 and the Hessian long-distance cycle route R8 run through the village .

The Knallbach flows from south to north through Walsdorf , about 100 meters east of the development boundary the Emsbach flows into which the Knallbach flows before it reaches Würges.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 774 as a gift to the Lorsch Monastery .

In 1156 Gottfried von Beselich founded a Benedictine monastery for monks in Walsdorf , which was converted into a nunnery in the first half of the 13th century and existed until it was sacked by Spanish troops in 1634.

Around 1200 the rule over Walsdorf went to the Nassau as bailiffs of Limburg . In 1355 Walsdorf fell to the county of Nassau-Idstein when the Walram property was divided .

In the 14th century Walsdorf received city-like rights through Count Adolf I of Nassau-Idstein . The settlement was moved from the valley to a hill and surrounded by a city wall with towers. The two city gates from this fortification were only demolished in 1822.

The first church was mentioned as the Marienkapelle in 1396. The late Gothic parish church was built at the beginning of the 16th century, but it was burned down by Bavarian troops along with the town in 1644. The current Protestant church is therefore a reconstruction from the years 1652 to 1663.

Even after the Thirty Years' War , the place was destroyed several times by major fires. In 1692 a major fire destroyed almost the entire village. During the reconstruction, the former monastery district was included and the current street layout in the old village was created. After the last fire in 1831, the barns were built further outside on the former city wall, which resulted in today's characteristic view of the town from a closed front of half-timbered houses .

In 1730 the first house was built outside the city wall.

On October 1, 1971 Walsdorf was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the town of Idstein incorporated . For the district of Walsdorf, as for all districts, a local district with a local advisory board and mayor was set up.

Culture and sights

Buildings

In addition to the church with ceiling and wall paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, remnants of the former city wall, but above all the 24-meter high Hutturm from the 14th century and two other towers, have been preserved. There are no more remains of the monastery.

The closed barn front from the 19th century presents itself to the visitor from the direction of the eastbound federal road 8 as the most striking feature of the place. Some of the barns have now been converted into residential houses.

From 1907 to 1951 the fulling mill, now a popular excursion destination, supplied the town with 110 V direct current .

Dolles village

  • In 2013 Walsdorf won the Dolles Dorf competition , which is held every year by the Hessischer Rundfunk . A village is drawn every Thursday in the Hessenschau and presented on the following Saturday. Four villages make it to the finals and compete at the hr-Treff at the Hessentag. Walsdorf won on June 16, 2013 in Kassel against Nonnenroth , Röhrenfurth and Neukirchen and received the golden uncle Otto from Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier .
