Walter Engel (Germanist)

Walter Engel (born November 13, 1942 in Sânmihaiu German , German Deutschsanktmichael , Banat , Kingdom of Romania ) is a lecturer , literary scholar , journalist and foundation director.

Life

Engel attended high school in Hatzfeld and studied German and Romanian at the University of the West Timișoara from 1960 to 1965. He then taught German in Heltau (Romanian Cisnădie) in Transylvania (1966–1968), as the cultural editor of the Hermannstädter Zeitung , Die Woche (1968–1968) 72) and as a research assistant and lecturer at the chair for German studies at the University of Timişoara (1972–1980).

After his resettlement in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1980 he received his doctorate in 1981 in Heidelberg to the Dr. phil. at Dietrich Harth (Modern German Literature), co-referee was Klaus Heitmann (Romanian Literature), on "German Literature in the Banat (1840-1939)".

After working as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg in 1982, he trained for the civil service at academic libraries in Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main from 1982 to 1984 , which he passed with the state examination in September 1984. From 1984 to 1987 Walter Engel was a research assistant at the research center "Bibliography of the German-Language Literature Journals of the 19th Century" (Estermann) at the City and University Library in Frankfurt am Main. From 1987 to 1988 Engel was department head in the Office for Science and Art of the City of Frankfurt am Main. From 1988 to 2006 he was director of the "Haus des Deutschen Ostens" foundation, since 1992 Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus. German-Eastern European Forum.

From 1989 to 2006 he was chairman of the board of the East German museums, collections and home parlors in North Rhine-Westphalia, and since 1998 he has been a member of the pedagogical working group of the student competition North Rhine-Westphalia Encounter with Eastern Europe. The Germans and their eastern neighbors are responsible for German literature .

From 1991 to 1995 he was a lecturer at the Philos. Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, German Department, Modern German Literature. From 1993 to 1999 he was President of the Cultural Association of the Banat Germans.

Foundation of the quarterly West-Ost-Journal (Düsseldorf, 1995) and its long-time editor-in-chief (1995-2006).

Engel organized and conducted numerous specialist conferences in the fields of literature, cultural history and history in Germany, Romania and Poland and was the initiator and director of the Düsseldorf "Literature Forum East-West" from 1989 to 2006. He also gave his own literary lectures in Germany, Romania , Hungary and Austria .
