Walter Gruler (born August 24, 1951 ) is a former German soccer player .

Player career

Walter Gruler began his career as a player in the men's division at FC 08 Villingen . There he played in the Regionalliga Süd 1971/72 29 games in which he managed a goal. He then went to Freiburg FC . But even his three goals in 19 missions could not prevent Freiburg from being relegated in the 1973/74 season .

In 1975 Walter Gruler went to the 2nd Bundesliga at Göttingen 05 . At Göttingen, Gruler was part of the regular formation under Reinhard Roder in the 1975/76 season. Even when Roder was replaced by Bernd Oles in 1976/77 after the first half of the season, which ended in a relegation zone, Gruler kept his regular place. But even under the new trainer, Göttingen 05 missed relegation. However, when the Bonner SC got their license revoked, those responsible waived the now possible relegation.

Then Walter Gruler moved to the 1977/78 season in the southern season of the 2nd Bundesliga, where he signed a contract with FC 08 Homburg . After he was not used there under coach Uwe Klimaschefski in the first six games of the season as a midfielder , he only missed two of the remaining 32 games after retraining as a defender . Together with Albert Müller , Gerd Schwickert and Horst Ehrmantraut , Gruler formed the defense formation that laid the foundation for third place behind SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Nürnberg . Also in the 1978/79 season , the defense was the showpiece of the Homburgers , who took 7th place in the final table. In 1979/80 , after 36 appearances in the preseason, Gruler was the only FC Homburg player to play in all 40 league games over the full season. The fact that the defense weakened unusually in that season and finally a disappointing 12th place after the previous year's placements could not prevent Gruler.

When Homburg's coach Klimaschefski moved to Hertha BSC after the season , which had recently been relegated from the 1st Bundesliga , Gruler followed him to West Berlin with regular goalkeeper Gregor Quasten . At Hertha, Gruler played all 42 games again in 1980/81 . At the end of the season, the Berliners had scored 123 goals and by far the best goal difference, but were ultimately one point behind Eintracht Braunschweig in third place and thus missed the promotion. In 1981/82 the 2nd Bundesliga was played on a single track for the first time. After a good start to the season, Hertha got into a crisis at the end of the first half of the season and slipped from the top of the table. Klimaschefski was replaced by Georg Gawliczek after 17 games . Under the new coach, Gruler was able to assert himself again and finally celebrated promotion to the upper house of football behind FC Schalke 04 in second place . There, however, Gruler and his club immediately had to relegate last placed in 1982/83 .

After missing relegation, Walter Gruler went to 1. FC Saarbrücken . There he was first a regular player in the second division season 1983/84 , in the second half of the season he was injured only for a short period. Because of this injury, Walter Gruler ended his career as a professional footballer in the summer of 1984.
