In the 9th or 10th century the Slav Vido founded a Fronhof in the area of today's Weidnitz . The name of the settlement at that time was probably "Vidonici".

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1180 in a document about a "Rudolfus de Widence". Another document from 1332 mentions a "Curia" (court of a bishop) in Weidnitz. At the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, the von Weidnitz family probably died out. This was linked to the split in the medieval Fronhofverband . By dividing the extensive property, a hamlet was created with several half , quarter and eighth yards as well as smaller Selden and "Troßhäuser". Weidnitz grew steadily over the centuries and the name developed from its early form "Widence" via "Widenca", "Weydenz" (1341), "Weidenitz" (1355) and "Weydtnitz" to today's Weidnitz.

A castle owned by Schaumberg was first mentioned in Weidnitz in 1686. In 1747 Weidnitz was mentioned as a village owned by the von Schaumberg family . Towards the end of the 18th century, a clerk of the von Schaumberg family was employed in Weidnitz with his own office building. Before the Schaumberg rule, the place belonged to the von Redwitz , von Aufseß , the territory of the Bamberg prince-bishops and the Sonnefeld monastery .

With the beginning of industrialization and machine shoe production in Burgkunstadt , the population of Weidnitz increased rapidly, the development into a workers' village began and the structural gap between Weidnitz and Burgkunstadt became smaller and smaller.

Weidnitz was the first community to join the city of Burgkunstadt on July 1, 1971. On June 30, 1971, numerous citizens, several local politicians and the then mayors Pfadenhauer (Burgkunstadt) and Mader (Weidnitz) gathered at the then local border, where the two mayors cut a ribbon stretched across the street that symbolized the unification.
