action
Roscoe Jenkins enters under the name Dr. RJ Stevens on talk shows. He's successful and has a lot of fans, but he still says he hasn't achieved anything significant. Jenkins is engaged to show business Bianca Kittles and has a ten year old son, Jamaal.
Jenkins, his son and Kittles travel to the hometown of Jenkins, where the entertainer's parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. His last visit was nine years ago. He meets Lucinda Allen, whom he once wooed. Jenkins remembers the motives that once moved him to move away. He starts to doubt whether he acted correctly.
Reviews
Justin Chang wrote in Variety magazine on Feb. 8, 2008 that the film features "big jokes" , "bawdy gossip" , stereotypes about southern African Americans and the occasional inspired improvisation. Lawrence courageously leaves the comedic focus to other actors like Mike Epps, Michael Clarke Duncan and Mo'Nique, who are all agile ( "Lawrence gamely cedes the comic spotlight to Epps, Duncan and Mo'Nique - skillful performers all" ).
Sheri Linden described the film in The Hollywood Reporter on February 8, 2008 as a "hectic" comedy that promotes family values. The formulaic script is an excuse for the talented actors. The funniest scenes are those in which the actors improvise during the credits.
backgrounds
The film was shot in Shreveport and Minden , Louisiana . It opened in cinemas in the USA on February 8, 2008 and grossed around 42 million US dollars there by March 23, 2008 .
