As the son of the Protestant pastor Gerhard Bätzing, Werner Bätzing first grew up in the north Hessian village of Istha and from 1956 in the small town of Fritzlar . After graduating from high school in 1968 at the König-Heinrich-Schule there , he studied Protestant theology and philosophy from 1968 to 1974 at the Church University of Bethel / Bielefeld and at the universities of Tübingen and Heidelberg . After the first theological exam, he worked as a religion teacher at a grammar school in Berlin in 1974/75 , but then looked for a different direction in life. He completed an apprenticeship as a retail bookseller and then worked as a bookseller, book manufacturer and editor in various Berlin bookstores and publishers until 1983. In 1982 he worked for a year and a half as a representative of the "North Hessian Half-timbered House Exchange" in an architecture office.

Fascinated by the Alps since 1976 , he studied geography and philosophy at the Technical University of Berlin from 1983 to 1987 , while simultaneously doing independent publishing and journalism on the subject of "Alps". After completing his master's degree, in 1987 he became a doctoral candidate at the Geographical Institute of the TU Berlin and a lecturer at the Institute for Landscape and Open Space Planning at the TU. In 1988 he moved to the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern ( Switzerland ) as Paul Messerli's assistant , where he received his doctorate in geography in December 1989. From 1990 to 1995 he was senior assistant and lecturer at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern, where he obtained his habilitation in geography in January 1993 . After a visiting professorship in the 1994/95 winter semester at the Institute for Geography at the University of Vienna ( Austria ), he was appointed Professor for Cultural Geography at the Institute for Geography at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in July 1995 . Since his retirement at the end of September 2014, he has been head of the archive for integrative alpine research.
