Its 26 sub-areas are located in the municipalities of Bodman-Ludwigshafen (18.79 ha), Hilzingen (225.53 ha), Mühlhausen-Ehingen (169.15 ha), Orsingen-Nenzingen (75.18 ha), Steißlingen (206, 74 ha) and Volkertshausen (18.79 ha) as well as the cities of Aach (112.77 ha), Engen (620.21 ha), Singen (394.68 ha) and Stockach (37.59 ha) in the district of Constance .

The protected area is described as "an area of ​​great geological differences: Hegau lowlands with flowing waters, reeds, flatland meadows and twelve caves, the Hegau volcanoes with grasslands , porphyry and basalt rocks and species-rich deciduous and sometimes ravine forests".
