composition

criticism
Wildest Dreams received positive reviews. Sputnikmusic said that Swift shows that they take current influences and incorporate them into something impressive of their own. Corey Beasley of PopMatters wrote that Swift would copy Lana Del Rey here and also convey the atmosphere of her songs well. Marah Eakin from the AV Club and Alexis Petridis from the Guardian also noticed the influences from Lana Del Rey . The New York Times highlighted the most pronounced variations of her voice, while she sings the verse rather calmly, it goes an octave higher in the bridge.
Music video
The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn , who did the same on Taylor's previous singles Blank Space and Bad Blood . It was filmed in Africa and California. The video first ran in the run-up to the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30, 2015. In the video, Swift plays a fictional actress named Majorie Finn and Scott Eastwood plays Robert Kingsley. Swift's grandmother was called Majorie Finlay, her grandfather was Robert, her father's middle name was Kingsley. Swift got the idea for the video through a book by Ava Gardner and Peter Evans , The Secret Conversations . According to Khan, the video is based on classic Hollywood romances such as those between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and the films African Queen , Out of Africa and The English Patient . The video is set in the African savannah in the 1950s. The two actors, Majorie and Robert, shoot a film there and fall in love. After an argument, the romance ends and the two meet again at the premiere in Hollywood.
The video was praised for being a good match for the theme of the song and for setting itself apart from average videos by paying homage to the old films. Brittany Spanos Rolling Stone thought the video brought back old Hollywood glamor. There were also critical voices who said that the video provided an embellished version of the colonialism of that time.
