Wilhelm Gause (born March 27, 1853 in Krefeld , Rhine Province ; † June 13, 1916 in Stein an der Donau , Lower Austria ) was a German-Austrian portrait and genre painter and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School . His group portraits , which depict social life and special social events in Vienna in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are of particular importance .

Gause studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1870 to 1872 . There Andreas and Karl Müller , Wilhelm Lotz , Heinrich Lauenstein and Wilhelm Roßmann were his teachers. He also took lessons from the painter Eduard von Gebhardt from 1871 . In Düsseldorf Gause was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1879 he moved to Vienna , where he settled in Währing and made a name for himself as a gouache draftsman and newspaper illustrator . His specialty was emphasized realistic depictions of everyday life in Vienna and social events such as balls and celebrations. He drew for domestic and foreign newspapers, including for Die Gartenlaube and the Illustrirte Zeitung . A client and close friend was the Viennese columnist Eduard Pötzl . Gause regularly sent important Austrian and international exhibitions. He received an honorary diploma at the International Watercolor Exhibition in Dresden in 1889 and a silver medal at an exhibition of newspapers and illustration works in Paris . In 1889 he moved to Stein an der Donau . His three daughters Mini, Grete and Isolde also devoted themselves to painting. The youngest, Isolde (1905–1977), was a student of Eduard Zetsche .
