Gottlieb Ludwig Wilhelm Schellenberg (born May 31, 1819 in Rußheim , † April 14, 1879 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a grand-ducal Baden , later Prussian major general and commander of the Rastatt fortress .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was the son of pastor Georg Wilhelm Schellenberg (1784-1858) and his wife Anna Maria Christina, née Arnold (* 1801). His brother Johann Friedrich Theodor Schellenberg (1821–1862) became a pastor.

Military career

Schellenberg attended the Lyceum in Karlsruhe, where he lived with his uncle, the captain of the artillery Arnold. This promoted his interest in the weapon and therefore, after graduating on April 1, 1836, Schellenberg joined the artillery brigade of the Baden Army as a gunner . After successfully completing the military school in 1838 , he became a portepeef ensign and was promoted to first lieutenant by mid-October 1843 . He came on November 6, 1843 as a teacher at the General War School in Karlsruhe and on November 4, 1844 at the Artillery Equipment Directorate at the fortress in Rastatt, which was under construction at the time. During the Baden Revolution he was commanded to Lieutenant General von Scharnhorst on July 4, 1849 and was active in the siege of Rastatt. Schellenberg was then appointed provisional armory director on July 16, 1849 in Karlsruhe and director on August 13, 1849. He returned to the field service on July 7, 1850 as captain and battery chief . As part of the Baden-Prussian military convention, he was commanded to Prenzlau with four batteries for training purposes in July 1850 .

After the Prussian occupation troops withdrew, Schellenberg was appointed artillery director of the Rastatt fortress on November 17, 1850, and in this function completed the artillery armament of the facilities. In 1856 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . In Rastatt he was promoted to major on May 9, 1858 and to lieutenant colonel on September 29, 1860 . On February 4, 1864 he was appointed commander of the fortress artillery battalion and on February 17, 1864 a member of the artillery committee. He received the character of a colonel on March 17, 1866 and took part in the war against Prussia in the same year .

After the war he received his patent as colonel on March 10, 1868, and was appointed commander of the field artillery regiment on March 17, 1868 and an honorary citizen of Rastatt on March 23, 1868. By falling from his horse, Schellenberg sustained a serious head injury on June 13, 1870, which prevented him from actively participating in the war against France with a troop command . Therefore, with the mobilization on July 18, 1870, he was appointed in command of the Rastatt Fortress. He received on April 1, 1871 the character of major general and on May 30, 1871 the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class. As a result of overexertion, Schellenberg suffered a serious illness and therefore took two cures in Karlsbad for relief .

Due to the military convention with Prussia, Schellenberg was accepted into the Prussian army on July 15, 1871 as commandant of Rastatt . In this capacity he received the oak leaves for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, on the occasion of the Order's festival in January 1875, before he was put up for disposal on July 22, 1875 with the award of the Crown Order, 2nd class with a star, with a pension . He died on April 14, 1879 in Freiburg im Breisgau.

He was married to Maria Trötzschler.
