Wilhelm Ernst David von Bentheim (born January 21, 1768 in Hersfeld , † April 4, 1840 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general and director of the military boy education institute in Annaburg Palace .

Life

He was the son of Wilhelm von Bentheim († 1776) and his wife Margarete Salome, née von Gottesheim. His father was a Hesse-kasselischer landgräflich Major in the Infantry Battalion "block" during the American War of Independence fallen.

Military career

Bentheim came to Kassel as a cadet in 1776 . From there he was employed on March 25, 1784 as an ensign in the cavalry regiment "von Diemar" . On November 23, 1786, he was transferred to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment . Bentheim changed to Prussian service on May 7, 1787 and came to Warsaw as a second lieutenant in the fusilier battalion "von Baehr" . In 1789 he was promoted to aide in the battalion . In 1794 Bentheim took part in the campaign in Poland . On July 26, 1795 he was transferred to the infantry regiment of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia . From September 5, 1797 to August 30, 1805, Bentheim was a staff captain in the fusilier battalion of the "von Grünberg" infantry regiment . Then he was promoted to captain as a company commander in the 2nd East Prussian Fusilier Brigade. During the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Thorn cannonade and the battles near Gurszno , Waltersdorf and Godenwinkel.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Bentheim was transferred to the 2nd West Prussian Infantry Regiment on January 22, 1808 . This was followed from March 24, 1811 as a major in the 1st Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 10 and as such Bentheim was on March 2, 1813 commander of the III. Battalion appointed. In the same capacity he was transferred to the 5th Reserve Infantry Regiment (No. 17) on July 1, 1813 . During the Wars of Liberation Bentheim fought in the battles near Bautzen , Großbeeren and Dennewitz , where he earned the Iron Cross, 2nd class. He also took part in the sieges of Wittenberg and Bitsch and the assault on Arnhem . For his behavior in the battle of Laon , Bentheim was awarded the Order of St. Anne II. Class. On June 26, 1815 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on July 26, 1815 transferred to the 20th Infantry Regiment . There he was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1818 with a patent from April 11, 1818 . On May 29, 1821 he was transferred to the Military Boys Education Institute in Annaburg as director. On August 28, 1825 he received the Knight's Cross of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit and the Service Cross . On the occasion of his 50th service anniversary, Bentheim was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III on March 25, 1834 . Awarded class with a ribbon. On August 8th, 1835 he got his departure with the character of major general and an annual pension of 1500 thalers. He died on April 4, 1840 in Potsdam.

Bentheim married Dorothea Constance Holst (1794-1849) on March 11, 1793 in Bromberg . She was the eldest daughter of the South Prussian Excise and Customs Council Holst. The couple had several children:
