Willi und die Windzors is a German comedy from 1996. satirizes is the British royal family , whose members are suddenly in a row of terraced houses in Hannover find and try to get used there to the new circumstances.

action

In Great Britain the monarchy is abolished, which is why the Queen and her relatives are exiled . The only exception to this is Fergie and Prince Andrew , who have to stay in England until Fergie has paid off their debts. The royals try in vain to find accommodation in the other European royal houses until the only option left is asylum with the unsuspecting Bettenbergs in Hanover.

Else Bettenberg and her son Willi own a furniture store and are surprised when the relatives suddenly stand on the mat at night - accompanied by a huge police presence to protect them. Quite surprised and a little bit proud, the Bettenbergs take in their English relatives, which of course leads to some confusion and problems, because the Bettenbergs cannot actually offer the former standard of living of the Queen and her court. In addition, the Royals are practically broke because their assets have been confiscated by the new English republic. Else and Willi therefore have to help out with the household budget.

But these are not the only problems, because the media interest - especially in Diana and Charles - is huge. Charles, however, is more interested in Willi's girlfriend Ulrike, a riding instructor with a military tone, and the upcoming local elections, in which he wants to be elected mayor, while Diana seems to have fallen in love with Willi. The confusion only resolves when the prominent relatives score points at the horse race and thus obtain the necessary financial means to finance Charles' election as mayor of Hanover.

In England, the Republican Prime Minister is now struggling with a crisis due to a lack of income. After all, the royal family had promoted tourism. When bankruptcy looms, the prime minister tries to persuade the royal family to return and offers Charles the reintroduction of the monarchy. However, Charles decides to remain mayor in Hanover. The rest of the royal family also stays in Lower Saxony . On the basis of Charles' renunciation and the right of inheritance, Willi now becomes king and head of the Commonwealth and Diana his wife and queen. The Bettenberg furniture store is taken over by Fergie and Andrew.

Reviews

"Over-the-top comedy that pokes fun at German philistineism as well as the quirks and the idiosyncrasies of the English royal family that are rumored in the press."
